Will there be new stamps from Post Office's new self-service kiosks?

Post Office Limited (POL) has awarded a contract for the supply of new SSKs to imageHolders - that may mean new stamps, time will tell.

This was first reported in January on the annual Post and Go News post; more information is now available.

From the Postage labels of the uk blog:

With the old NCR units on their way out, the Post Office is preparing to introduce new self-service machines. These new machines will continue to offer a wide range of services, but with improved technology, they will likely focus on contactless and card payments. This transition could mean more convenient and secure transactions for customers, but for collectors, the big question remains: will the new devices continue to offer the same collectible “Post and Go” labels?

The new machines will be equipped with the latest technology, and while it’s unclear whether they will provide the same unique stamps, many collectors are hopeful that new, limited edition stamps and postmarks will be introduced with the new systems.

The Final Year for NCR Kiosks

For now, collectors still have a chance to visit the NCR kiosks before they are replaced. These final months will offer a last opportunity to obtain stamps from these machines, which have produced some iconic labels over the years. Whether you’re looking to add to your collection of “Open Value” stamps or seek out a machine-specific code, this is the time to make those visits to your local post office before the NCR units are retired.

This is the new machine:

With thanks to Brian Sinnott and Elliot J.

Design Highlights

Sleek, Space-Saving Build: The new kiosk fits seamlessly into tighter branch layouts without sacrificing functionality.

Integrated Parcel Sizing: Automated sizing and weighing hardware is built into the core unit, eliminating bulky add-ons and streamlining the user experience.

Dual-Mode Control Panel: A high-resolution touchscreen paired with tactile buttons ensures compliance with DDA accessibility standards.

Stamps on Demand
These kiosks aren’t just parcels and labels—we’re expecting a new series of ‘Post and Go’ style stamps - watch this space for information as soon as know

For the first time, collectors can capture not only photos of the kiosk’s streamlined chassis but also potentially secure trial-only stamp prints directly from the machine. Stay tuned for branch locations hosting the live pilot—and prepare your albums for a fresh wave of new collectables.

Royal Mail have been asked to comment on 'new stamps'.

Post and Go News 2025 - includes PO Branch self-service kiosks.

This post and its comments will hold all news on Post and Go stamps, machines, and PO Self Service Kiosks (SSKs).

For details of new Post and Go stamps issued by the postal authorities in Guernsey and Jersey I recommend WhiteKnight's Commonwealth Stamp Opinion. All issues from the islands, and Gibraltar and the SOAR stamps from Isle of Man and Ireland will normally be pictured there as announced.

Anything about the old Royal Mail machines and any later news for PO SSKs will continue to be added on the 2024 blog post. Please continue to make comments there or send me news/images by email.

Self-Service Kiosks

All readers and collectors should be indebted to Malcolm, Trevor and a few other people for their continued perambulations around the country reporting on the rapidly diminishing estate of Self-Service Kiosks in Post Office branches.

These will continue to throw up errors and surprises and they will be reported here either as comments or, if significant enough, as edits to this original post.

The reducing number of machines in use means that the large stocks of Queen Elizabeth Machin blanks will be spread even more thinly and take longer to use up, especially as branches now offer different service, such as Tracked24/48 or Evri, DPD, etc as alternatives to Royal Mail services.

Whereas the casual poster of packets might have visited the SSK they may now think twice (if the queues are not too long) and use a counter service.

So to start this year off with a picture last week, I don't know when this fault occurred at Cheltenham (WHSmith) PO.  The black ink is missing in the centre, leaving 2nd class short of an s and truncating the datastring.   The base stock is CL16S.  Thanks to JG and his friend for supplying this.

UPDATE 13 January.

If you read the comments you will see that Post Office Ltd (POL) has awarded a contract for the supply of new SSKs to imageHolders - that may mean new stamps, time will tell.

Trevor has added this information from the imageHolders website website:

Post Office branches continue to play a vital role in communities
As Post Office branches continue to play a vital role in communities, this initiative ensures they meet the evolving expectations of today’s customers. The new self-service kiosks will enable quick access to key services, like:

Postal Services: Send parcels, buy stamps, and more.
Home Shopping Returns: Return items without the hassle.
Electronic pre-advice and overseas services
Printed confirmation and tracking detail
By streamlining these services, the kiosks will allow staff to focus on complex queries, enhancing overall customer satisfaction.

Kiosk Accessibility at the Forefront
We’re committed to ensuring these kiosks are accessible to everyone. Our design is focused on inclusivity, with features like ergonomic screens and assistive technology support, including screen readers and braille interfaces. It’s all part of making sure that every visitor to the Post Office has a positive experience.

Richard Satchell, our CEO, shares:

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Post Office to help deliver more efficient and accessible services to customers across the UK. Our self-service kiosks will not only reduce wait times and improve customer satisfaction but will also ensure that these essential services remain inclusive to everyone, regardless of their abilities.”

Kiosks Rolling Out Across the Nation

The nationwide rollout is set to begin in Spring 2025, with self-service kiosks being introduced in a select number of Post Office branches before expanding to more branches across the country. This partnership signifies a major milestone in both imageHOLDERS’ and the Post Office’s ongoing missions to modernize service delivery, enhance customer experiences, and meet the changing needs of today’s consumers.

“Post Office is committed to enhancing customer service across the network, working in partnership with our Postmasters and retail partners,” commented Neal Newbrook, Propositions Manager, Post Office.

“Introducing these new self-service kiosks will make it easier and more efficient for customers to access the Post Office mail products they require. We are excited to work with imageHOLDERS on this key project that will help postmasters and our retail partners meet evolving customer needs.”

We look forward to this new chapter and can’t wait for you to experience our kiosks in action!

Update 28 April

Various contributors have mentioned kiosks now being 'Card Only'.  (See details in the comments.)

From RW here is a picture of the screen as it now appears.

New screen display showing 'CARD ONLY' on self-service kiosk in PO Branch Paignton.

UPDATE 8 May 2025.  In connection with Trevor's comment of today, this is the label on the machines in Sunderland.

Added to NCR SSK machines at Sunderland. (Thanks Trevor)

UPDATE 5 June 2025

The Postage Labels UK blog has been revived and contains information about the machines which will replace the currently failing SSKs.  The new machines will be non-cash (as the old are becoming), with more details, picture, and links here.

UPDATE 10 June 2025

I asked Post Office about the situation at Sheffeld and Chesterfield (see comments). I didn't get  an answer about those branches, but they did say:

"We are continuing to develop and test new look SSKs over the summer and launch initial capabilities in the autumn with the existing 200 or so branches with SSKs getting these new machines by March 2026.

"The SSKs will continue to be developed and we expect other designs becoming available and further expansion of automation solutions over the next 2-3 years and this will be spread out to big branches across the country."

UPDATE 21 June 2025

Here is the error described by Trevor in the current note.  This occurs at Gt Portland Street branch on kiosk 67, with the 1st class stamp printed from the second class slot and the 2nd class stamp was printed on the top half of a standard QE label from the third slot.

Errors on kiosk 67 at Great Portland Street June 2025.

UPDATE 17 April 2025

RW sent this picture of a Guernsey Arms Post and Go stamp with the inscription G.I.C. and reports that the kiosk that they used to print this stamp was being moved and they dropped it.

It's reported that they can't repair it and the one in the Bureau is not compatable so there is some question about what will happen with the 'Visiting Cruise Ships' overprints.

UPDATE 9 September.  News from RW of Singapore's POPDrop machine, of which more details here on their website.

Singapore Post's POPDrop machine

We don't have any examples of the labels or stamps from this yet.

Update 7 October.  My thanks to KR who provided this image of a label (of Aug 2025) from the General Post Office machine.

KR writes: Singapore is celebrating her 60th birthday in 2025 (National Day is 9 Aug) (hence the SG60) on the label.
It may be a time-limited label for National Day - I will update on what labels it dispenses should I visit the GPO again.
The dragon playground is nostalgic for Singaporeans as it was built in the 80s around the neighbourhoods

Update 11 November

KR reports that the National Day labels are no longer in use and these are now dispensed.

Post and Go News 2024

This post and its comments will hold all news on Post and Go stamps, machines, and PO SSKs.

For details of new Post and Go stamps issued by the postal authorities in Guernsey and Jersey I recommend WhiteKnight's Commonwealth Stamp Opinion. All issues from the islands, and Gibraltar and the SOAR stamps from Isle of Man will normally be pictured there as announced.

Anything about the old Royal Mail machines which operated until the end of last year at various military and other museums around the UK will continue to be added on the 2023 blog post. Please continue to make comments there or send me news/images by email.

Self Service Kiosks

PW has been dogged in his determination to report on what is happening at Sheffield (a city of more than half a million folks in northern England) ever since the Wilkinson's store closed in October last year.  In late November he reports that the Sheffield Post Office, located in the Wilkinson's (Wilko) Store in Haymarket, closed in early October. It had FAD no. 016340.

The only Post Office in Sheffield City Centre now is now at 33-35 Charles St, S1 2HU. There are now 2 Post and Go machines installed, which could be the 2 machines from the Wilkinson Store

However, as per usual they were not switched on for public use. The FAD no. for the shop is 247340.

This month he has an update. one of the machines in use.  The other machine was not in operation but a different kiosk without 'weighing plate', was present. I am sure this was not situated at the Sheffield Haymarket/Wilkinsons store so I am waiting for another visit to 'test' it. The Staff do not want to turn these machines on because they have to deploy a Staff Member to supervise them. There was a massive queue in the shop and no-one wanted to try and use the machines for their postal needs, but I marched up to them and had a go.

And a visit to Chesterfield at the turn of the year, brought errors of 'wrong roll position' in two kiosks. Kiosk 67 had 1st stock in the 2nd class position, producing 2nd class brown (R19YAL with inset phosphor bands) and 2nd class stock in the 1st class position, producing 1st class blue (CL17).

(Unfortunately only photos are provided but I have enhanced them to show the results to their best.)

Post and Go output from new location at Charles Street, Sheffield, 04/01/2024.

Chesterfield Post and Go SSK67 02/01/2024 Machin Anniversary strip 2nd class in error.

Chesterfield Post and Go SSK67 30/12/023 errors SSK68, 1st class on blue stock, and 2nd class on brown stock.

All news about P&G in 2024 will be here, and comments for the old (January 2023) post will be closed later in the month.

Comments on this post are now closed and locked in.  A P&G News 2025 will be available soon.  If you have anything else for 2024 please email me at the usual address. (See top right)

Post Office Self-Service Kiosks will remain in use for the forseeable future - official.

I reported earlier that Royal Mail would be removing all their Post and Go machines at the end of this year - that is the ones in the Postal Museum, various Armed Forces Museums around the country, and in a few other tourist attractions.

When this was originally reported there was a suggestion that Royal Mail had not given much thought to the position of the Post Office Branch Self-Service Kiosks (SSKs), or those in Guernsey, Jersey and Gibraltar.

I asked Royal Mail for a statement on the SSKs, and asked the other organisations including Post Office Ltd what their plans are.

The islands were first to reply, both saying that they had no plans to close down operations and that they would continue to use them in all locations.

Guernsey Stamps @guernseystamps

Good morning. We have no plans to withdraw our Post & Go machines. We'll be releasing our 2024 stamp schedule in the near future with full details of what's coming up next year.

Jersey Stamps  @JerseyStamps

We also have no plans to withdraw the machines, keep an eye out next year for new issues!

I've still had no response from Gibraltar, but last week received responses from both Royal Mail and Post Office Ltd on their SSKs.

Post Office

Post Office  @PostOffice

Hi, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Our SSK’s remain unchanged at the present time and there are no plans immediately to change them.

Royal Mail

"I understand SSKs remain well stocked and so will continue to remain operational. The next review will be 2024 when a reprint is expected. This will really be a question for Post Office Ltd.

If they continue with them, and need postage stock for them, then we will supply that."

UPDATE

My thanks to RW for these photographs of the Paignton Self-Service Kiosks.

Self-Service Kiosks at Paignton Post Office

Click on these images to enlarge them.

So it will be well into next year before the King Charles III Post and Go stamps appear for self-service kiosks.

If/When they do we should expect Royal Mail to produce stamps, first day covers and presentation packs, perhaps from the single machine that they have retained for that purpose - or maybe they will be produced by Cartor/Walsall on a sideways coil in the same way that self-adhesive stamps are for first day covers.

Something else to remind them about, perhaps?

Not this year, but maybe next year.

Post and GOne – Royal Mail announce P&G Closing at Christmas 2023.

Royal Mail Stamps and Collectibles has announced the closure of Post and Go.

"Following a thorough review of our Post & Go Kiosks we have taken the decision to end all remaining Post & Go activities by the end of this year.

"Several factors have contributed to this decision including the fact that there has been no new Post and Go issues for several years and the change of Monarch would now require new issues to be re-introduced.

"Existing kiosks will remain operational through until Christmas, including a final overprint on certain kiosks, details of these will be shared by our operational partners at IAR soon.

"All remaining Post & Go kiosks will shut down on 31st December 2023 and be removed from all sites shortly afterwards."

Background to Post and Go, original website article 2008.

Original Wincor-Nixdorf installation at Birmingham Post Office October 2008.

Edit: NB this announcement only applies to Royal Mail machines provided by IAR, installed in museums.

I have enquired as to the situation regarding Jersey Post, Guernsey Post and Gibraltar Post which all use IAR machines, and about Post Office Self-Service Kiosks which use different machines.

UPDATE 5 September - replies from Postal Administrations.
Good morning. We have no plans to withdraw our Post & Go machines. We'll be releasing our 2024 stamp schedule in the near future with full details of what's coming up next year.

Morning  We also have no plans to withdraw the machines, keep an eye out next year for new issues!

April Rate Changes coming to Post & Go at last?

Back in April, postage tariffs were changed and the same rate (£2.20) now applies to letters worldwide up to 100g.  This should have been reflected in changes to the service inscriptions on Post and Go stamps, but comments on the 2023 Post and Go News post noted that this had not happened on 9 April, and by the end of May the Europe 100g / Worldwide 20g was still being dispensed.

In some ways this did not matter because the Worldwide 100g stamp is dispensed for the same price, but it suggests that Royal Mail have not regarded the Self-Service Kiosks in Post Offices, or the Museum IAR machines to be very important.

Museum Post and Go stamp with service indicator now obsolete

Thanks to contributor Chris, we now have the news that

I have at last been informed (24/07/23) that the 'World 20g' will be removed at the next change that goes live on the kiosks. So hopefully this will be soon.

Thanks Chris.

Post and Go News 2023

This post will hold all news on Post and Go stamps, machines, UK and foreign (and islands), including museums and PO SSKs.

There's nothing to report yet so the first emailed report will form the basis for this post.

As we have no new tariff until at least early February (a month's notice must be given to the regulator and to the Stock Exchange), maybe there will be nothing new for a while.

And what will the new definitive design be?  How long before King Charles III Post and Go will appear (if at all), and how long before all the Machin and other QE2 stocks are used up?

January 6:  A significant number of useful comments has just been let through on the 2022 post, having been identified by Blogger as spam, rather than sent for moderation.  Comments for 2022 will be closed soon, so if you have any more Christmas/Museum/SSK news for last year, please send it through soon.

A reminder that this post relies on contributors to add into the comments, where all new information will normally be.

However, having just seen this on WOPA's Twitter feed, I feel it appropriate to show what the island's postal service is doing.  The new design featuring the Jersey Crest also shows the crest of King Charles III.  The issue date was 6 April.  Jersey Post had shown them earlier but in a short animation which gave nothing away in the opening frame.  I think WOPA have shown them how to grab (my) attention.

Redesigned Jersey Post and Go stamps featuring the Jersey crest and that of King Charles III

There is no news of Royal Mail doing anything similar: as the comments below show, many Post Office SSKs seem to be notable for being broken or switched off due to lack of attending staff, and the only Royal Mail Machines now are at Museums.  If anything does happen I would expect it to be at The Postal Museum first, but who knows!

UPDATE 1 September 2023.

Some postage rates will be increased again on 2 October 2023, affecting the cost of Post and Go stamps and strips.  More details here.

More importantly for this thread;

"Following a thorough review of our Post & Go Kiosks we have taken the decision to end all remaining Post & Go activities by the end of this year."

More details here.

UPDATE 18 September 2023.

Post Office Self-Service Kiosks, and Guernsey and Jersey Post IAR machines will continue in use into 2024.

More details here.

UPDATE 8 November 2023.

Postal Museum press release on final two months of Post & Go with a variety of combinations of stamps and inscriptions.  [Update: the exact arrangements still have to be confirmed! 23/11]

UPDATE 23 November 2023.

Malcolm reports that at last the inscription on the stamps has at last been changed, on Wednesday 22 November.  Europe 100g now replaces the dual value E100 / W20.  The example below is from Milton Keynes.   Note that the Postal Museum machines had already been changes as shown on another post.

Winter Greenery with Europe 100g inscription from NCR Post Office self-service kiosk Milton Keynes 22 November 2023.

The same change took effect earlier on Royal Mail machines earlier - this is the Postal Museum/Mail Rail.

All news about P&G in 2023 will be here, and comments for the old (January 2022) post are closed.

There are a few other posts on Post and Go during the year, notably concerning the withdrawal of machines at Museums.

Post and GOne – Royal Mail announce P&G Closing at Christmas 2023.

Post Office Self-Service Kiosks will remain in use for the forseeable future - official.

Museum Post and Go machines are in the final throes but not dead yet.

The Postal Museum: Final throes of Post and Go

In the Comments to this post, Trevor has told us of an unannounced inscription at the Fleet Air Arm Museum, "Last Overprint".  I suppose it gives them a few more sales in the final week, although they must have told somebody because they are listed on eBay!

For the record, these are the edited pictures.  Swindon GWR and Shakespeare now added - thanks to Trevor for these also.

Fleet Air Arm Post & Go Last Overprint Machin MA13 strip.

Fleet Air Arm Post & Go Last Overprint Union Flag strip.

Shakespeare Post & Go Last Overprint Union Flag and Machin 1st class.

Swindon Steam GWR Post & Go Last Overprint Union Flag and Machin 1st class.

This may be the last entry for the 2023 Post and Go story.  I'll leave the comments open until something happens in January to warrant making a new 2024 post.

Thank you to all contributors and readers.

Last Post about the ending of Museum P&G.

This comment is included at the end: Someone was trying to sell an ‘R20YAL’ Machin strip from the Postal Museum with the ‘End of Post & Go …’ overprint that was installed for the last half hour after the Machin Anniversary stamps ran out.

So, bearing in mind that the Postal Museum had indicated in its press release that (to paraphrase) "if the rolls we announced run out we will replace them with something else, this shouldn't be a surprise.

More important, if someone reading this decided to find out what would be installed afterwards and spends money to find out, why is there a problem?

So the starting price of one of these 'last half-hour" strips on an auction site was £140, you buy it or you don't.  If you MUST have it because it exists, then that is your choice - you decide just how much it is worth to you.

As my customers will know, I went especially to the East Anglian Railway Museum. My regular customers got them at regular prices, others paid more.

Likewise I sourced stamps from Perth (Australia and Scotland) and Hong Kong Exhibitions, and charged accordingly. If I had any left to auction they might have made better prices.

And when new labels were introduced (Europe and Worldwide 60g stamps,  Wincor Europe 20/World 10g etc) I arranged with customers and collectors in many parts of the country to buy the older reels which were still (or had been put) in their local machines to be able to supply my customers with the less common versions or bought them by mail order/phone from distant post offices (eg Kidderminster).

All my speculation*.  And some of these I still have so while they are still good for postage (and their value has increased of course), I didn't always get all my money back in initial sales.

I could have, but didn't, put them on eBay.  I could still.  And then they either sell or they don't. Just because somebody lists something with a Buy it Now price of £140, it doesn't mean it sold at that price. And if it did, it was worth it to someone.  If they achieve a high price at auction, then they are worth it to more than one perosn.

Get in, or stay out, but don't complain that somebody spent enough money to exhaust what was left of the announced labels, and then bought some of what replaced them.

* If you found a stamp with a printing or perforation error at your post office, would you only buy one or would you buy the whole sheet?

Limited comments will be allowed on this before I shut the post for comments completely.

Post and Go update - Index of last two years and summary of recent comments.

Regular readers and especially Post and Go collectors will be aware of the post from May 2019 which has had more comments and updates than any other by our loyal readers.

It seems as if the comment limit or text limit may have been reached.  Recent comments appeared briefly, but then I found that some earlier comments had not been moderated through, and when I let them through, others dropped off the end.

Update: Thank you for comments and suggestions.  There is far too much work involved in splitting off all the 2021 comments into this post; instead I have repeated those made from September onwards and added any which failed to make the cut.  If I have omitted any please let me know.

A new post will be started in 2022.

UPDATE 7 November:  An anonymous reader has sent a comment regarding the closure of WHS Local franchises and how this would impact on Post Offices.  The contract was to end at the end of 2020.

As this is a 2019 story I think we would have found out by now had their been any impact on Post Offices and Post & Go.  I'm not sure that the 'locals' (of which we had one in Dereham that had to close after only a short time being open, also not realising that the Crown Office sold WHS-branded postal packaging etc) had any post offices anyway.   I've a link to the story on 'better retailing' if anybody wants it.

The May 2019 blogpost started from the premise that nothing was happening with no new P&G designs:

As readers will know there have been no new Post and Go stamps issued by Royal Mail, and none is in the programme for the current year.

And certainly from that point of view nothing has changed.

What we have had since 2019 are several postage rate changes and new 'values' of stamps which have slowly increased the total value of the collectors strip.  So I'll start this post with a summary/index of other P&G posts.

Comments on the earlier post.   Just in case they disappear because of action or inaction by me, the comments made on the 2019 post since August this year, mainly concerning branch closures and changes, are reproduced here:

  1. Malcolm 20 September 2021 at 13:01

I wonder if there is anyone out there who can help me get a little nearer to completing my collection of post & go stamps.
I collect 1st and 2nd class singles both Machin and pictorial from each kiosk in the country and I am in need of 2 * 1st class Machins from both kiosks k67 and k68 at Perth.
If they happen to be there I also need 2 * 2nd class Pictorials from k68.
Unfortunately Perth is not an office who replies to postal requests and these were not available when I last visited when the Perth stamp show was on probably in 2019.
To their credit many offices do respond to postal requests and seem interested in my collection.

Apart from the Military Museums on 11/11/2021, do we know whether Poppies are going to appear in Post Office branches this year ?

    Replies

    1. Malcolm 14 October 2021 at 15:56

Unsure whether they will appear in NCR as a new printing although I am sure some branches may insert them with any unused stock they have.

One other upcoming overprint prior to the Remembrance issue at the 5 static sites will be A002 at the NMRN, where HMS Victory is located, will have a ‘Pop Up’ overprint to mark the Battle of Trafalgar.
Overprint on current Union Flag and Machin = Trafalgar Day
The overprint will run from the 21st to 31st October.

I was told by a fellow collector who lives in Manchester that one of the offices in the Manchester / Liverpool area sorry I cant recall which one that the remaining poppy stock they held was going to be inserted.

7.  Trevor 2 November 2021 2048: Winter Greenery R21YAL & CL21S on Ebay tonight

I believe these are all the comments which dropped off the original 2019 post.  My thanks to JG for pointing out that something was amiss before the email notifications of these disappeared forever.

Winter Greenery 2021

While some offices are using old stock, as Trevor pointed out above the 21-coded stock has already appeared on eBay.   RW sent this image of the box label indicating that the new 2021-coded stamps should not be used before 2 November.

UPDATE 16 November:  DP has sent this picture of the output from Leicester this week showing a couple of glitches in the printing, adding "The sessions between the strips were stamps for postage, both of which printed normally."

UPDATE 26 November:  I should have included these earlier news snippets from IntelligentAR concerning the 'Lest We Forget' inscription to be used at military museums.

August 4, 2021 Remembrance Day at NMRN sites

Remembrance Day will be marked at all NMRN Sites with an underprint of ‘Lest we forget’ on both Union and Poppy stamps from Thursday November 11th until end of Tuesday 30th November 2021. The Poppy stamp will temporarily replace the Machin stamp during this time.

In the event, problems with the payment system prevented the machines from being operated normally, but rather than using the logic of 'the time has passed' somebody decided that 'Lest We Forget' and the Poppy stamps should still be used so that collectors would buy them, even if it was two weeks late.

UPDATE 24 November:   My thanks to Malcolm and 'cfn' for information from the unofficial but only news site for Post and Go, that of Royal Mail's contractor IntelligentAR, concerning the military museum sites.

"IAR is pleased to announce that Worldpay have finally fixed some of the payment issues on Post & Go kiosks.

Accordingly, the delayed Poppy and Overprint will now be available on kiosks:

A003 FAAM

A004 Submarine Museum

A006 HMS Trincomalee

Dates: Friday 26th November until end Friday 10th December

When the remaining NMRM kiosks come on-line (A002 and A007) they will carry the current Flag and Machin with ‘Royal Navy’ overprint."

Lest We Forget images below from 'cfn', from machine A004 in the RN Submarine Museum. The Poppy is MA15 and the Flag MA19.

I should have added this image earlier, also supplied by cfn, of the A013 Mail Rail imprint on MA15 Poppy stamps.

Happy New Post and Go Year - first day, first error!

As intimated at the beginning of last month, the change in postage rates which took effect yesterday means a steep rise in the cost of a Post and Go collectors strip.

Thanks to one of our regular contributors I can show the new stamps on the Machin definitive stamp, and also on the 2nd class Winter Greenery thanks to Harrow PO which had the wrong roll in the first class position. (Purchased today)

This change increases the total cost from the previous £11.64 to £13.84 with the reappearance of a Worldwide 100g letter stamp, and the appearance for the first time of the Europe (£3.25) and Worldwide (all zones - £4.20) Large Letter 100g stamps.

Thanks to RW for this picture of the real 1st class Winter Greenery strip on the correct stock:

New Self-Service machines cominng to Post Offices sometime.

There are often reports of Post and Go (P&G) or Self-Service Kiosks (SSK) in Post Office branches being out of order and we know that these are second generation, the NCR machines taking over from Wincor-Nixdorf from 2014 onwards.

Earlier this year Post Office Ltd started the process for replacing those NCR machines.  A paper was published in the summer with details of the requirement and what the new machines would be required to do - which is more than they do now.  This is a 12-page document (plus more pages explaining the Crown Commercial Service Spark framework system).  Here are a few:

From this you will see that the system will still be required (of course) to link to the "Horizon back end". In some ways it would make sense for Fujitsu to be involved - at least then there would be no blaming the other contractor when things went wrong.  But given Futjitsu's record on the previous problems with Horizon it would seem to be unlikely that they would be involved even if they offered the best price.

Meanwhile Better Retailing suggests that there could be SSKs in non-Post Office stores.

The ‘family’ of devices would include ‘full service kiosks’ providing a wide range of basic post office services and other devices focused on areas such as parcel drop-off and returns.

The advert read: “All devices must have the potential to increase revenue by reducing queues, transaction times & cost to serve and to enhance the customer experience by improving access to particular products.”

While it said many of these would be made available to PO and its retailers on a purchase or lease basis, the document also included plans to deploy the devices “in new stand-alone non-PO locations”.  [My emphasis]

Although the article also says

When asked to comment, PO said it has since abandoned the plans. A spokesperson told betterRetailing: “The ‘self-service devices’ notice was an early market engagement exercise that started in 2019, then stopped and was not taken any further."

the fact that they considered it means that the option is always there to be considered.

Implications for collectors

When new machines are introduced I think it is most likely that there will be off-site trials, followed by live installations in a few test areas so that the public can do the 'test to destruction' and find the bugs that the contractor has not thought of.  This will be folllowed by a more general roll-out.

It is inconceivable that the overprinting on the new stamps produced from these machines will be identical to existing NCR or RM machines, so we will have a repeat of the situation when NCR were replacing Wincor.  The saving grace for those with limited budgets, or the sad thing for those who like a great deal of variety, is that there will be few different stamp designs available.

The only stamps which should be available (barring any unexpected new issues) would be Machin 1st & 2nd, Union Flag, and - at the appropriate time - Robin and winter (probably Winter Greenery).  If the people who have managed to create multiple varieties from the last set of changes (using old stock which should not exist) haven't used all that on the September changes, then they might be expected to use it up on tomorrow's changes and thus have nothing left to feed the new machines.

Certainly I would hope that nobody would try to suggest that, for instance, Birds, Farm Animals, and British flowers would be legally available from the new machines.
