Post and Go News 2023

This post will hold all news on Post and Go stamps, machines, UK and foreign (and islands), including museums and PO SSKs.

There's nothing to report yet so the first emailed report will form the basis for this post.

As we have no new tariff until at least early February (a month's notice must be given to the regulator and to the Stock Exchange), maybe there will be nothing new for a while.

And what will the new definitive design be?  How long before King Charles III Post and Go will appear (if at all), and how long before all the Machin and other QE2 stocks are used up?

January 6:  A significant number of useful comments has just been let through on the 2022 post, having been identified by Blogger as spam, rather than sent for moderation.  Comments for 2022 will be closed soon, so if you have any more Christmas/Museum/SSK news for last year, please send it through soon.

A reminder that this post relies on contributors to add into the comments, where all new information will normally be.

However, having just seen this on WOPA's Twitter feed, I feel it appropriate to show what the island's postal service is doing.  The new design featuring the Jersey Crest also shows the crest of King Charles III.  The issue date was 6 April.  Jersey Post had shown them earlier but in a short animation which gave nothing away in the opening frame.  I think WOPA have shown them how to grab (my) attention.

Redesigned Jersey Post and Go stamps featuring the Jersey crest and that of King Charles III

There is no news of Royal Mail doing anything similar: as the comments below show, many Post Office SSKs seem to be notable for being broken or switched off due to lack of attending staff, and the only Royal Mail Machines now are at Museums.  If anything does happen I would expect it to be at The Postal Museum first, but who knows!

UPDATE 1 September 2023.

Some postage rates will be increased again on 2 October 2023, affecting the cost of Post and Go stamps and strips.  More details here.

More importantly for this thread;

"Following a thorough review of our Post & Go Kiosks we have taken the decision to end all remaining Post & Go activities by the end of this year."

More details here.

UPDATE 18 September 2023.

Post Office Self-Service Kiosks, and Guernsey and Jersey Post IAR machines will continue in use into 2024.

More details here.

UPDATE 8 November 2023.

Postal Museum press release on final two months of Post & Go with a variety of combinations of stamps and inscriptions.  [Update: the exact arrangements still have to be confirmed! 23/11]

UPDATE 23 November 2023.

Malcolm reports that at last the inscription on the stamps has at last been changed, on Wednesday 22 November.  Europe 100g now replaces the dual value E100 / W20.  The example below is from Milton Keynes.   Note that the Postal Museum machines had already been changes as shown on another post.

Winter Greenery with Europe 100g inscription from NCR Post Office self-service kiosk Milton Keynes 22 November 2023.

The same change took effect earlier on Royal Mail machines earlier - this is the Postal Museum/Mail Rail.

All news about P&G in 2023 will be here, and comments for the old (January 2022) post are closed.

There are a few other posts on Post and Go during the year, notably concerning the withdrawal of machines at Museums.

Post and GOne – Royal Mail announce P&G Closing at Christmas 2023.

Post Office Self-Service Kiosks will remain in use for the forseeable future - official.

Museum Post and Go machines are in the final throes but not dead yet.

The Postal Museum: Final throes of Post and Go

In the Comments to this post, Trevor has told us of an unannounced inscription at the Fleet Air Arm Museum, "Last Overprint".  I suppose it gives them a few more sales in the final week, although they must have told somebody because they are listed on eBay!

For the record, these are the edited pictures.  Swindon GWR and Shakespeare now added - thanks to Trevor for these also.

Fleet Air Arm Post & Go Last Overprint Machin MA13 strip.

Fleet Air Arm Post & Go Last Overprint Union Flag strip.

Shakespeare Post & Go Last Overprint Union Flag and Machin 1st class.

Swindon Steam GWR Post & Go Last Overprint Union Flag and Machin 1st class.

This may be the last entry for the 2023 Post and Go story.  I'll leave the comments open until something happens in January to warrant making a new 2024 post.

Thank you to all contributors and readers.

Last Post about the ending of Museum P&G.

This comment is included at the end: Someone was trying to sell an ‘R20YAL’ Machin strip from the Postal Museum with the ‘End of Post & Go …’ overprint that was installed for the last half hour after the Machin Anniversary stamps ran out.

So, bearing in mind that the Postal Museum had indicated in its press release that (to paraphrase) "if the rolls we announced run out we will replace them with something else, this shouldn't be a surprise.

More important, if someone reading this decided to find out what would be installed afterwards and spends money to find out, why is there a problem?

So the starting price of one of these 'last half-hour" strips on an auction site was £140, you buy it or you don't.  If you MUST have it because it exists, then that is your choice - you decide just how much it is worth to you.

As my customers will know, I went especially to the East Anglian Railway Museum. My regular customers got them at regular prices, others paid more.

Likewise I sourced stamps from Perth (Australia and Scotland) and Hong Kong Exhibitions, and charged accordingly. If I had any left to auction they might have made better prices.

And when new labels were introduced (Europe and Worldwide 60g stamps,  Wincor Europe 20/World 10g etc) I arranged with customers and collectors in many parts of the country to buy the older reels which were still (or had been put) in their local machines to be able to supply my customers with the less common versions or bought them by mail order/phone from distant post offices (eg Kidderminster).

All my speculation*.  And some of these I still have so while they are still good for postage (and their value has increased of course), I didn't always get all my money back in initial sales.

I could have, but didn't, put them on eBay.  I could still.  And then they either sell or they don't. Just because somebody lists something with a Buy it Now price of £140, it doesn't mean it sold at that price. And if it did, it was worth it to someone.  If they achieve a high price at auction, then they are worth it to more than one perosn.

Get in, or stay out, but don't complain that somebody spent enough money to exhaust what was left of the announced labels, and then bought some of what replaced them.

* If you found a stamp with a printing or perforation error at your post office, would you only buy one or would you buy the whole sheet?

Limited comments will be allowed on this before I shut the post for comments completely.

  1. A late amendment to my last post on the Postal Museum, the Greenery came out of both Mail Rail and Postal Museum kiosks after sale on the 31st December not the 1st January.
Replaced in Mail Rail by R20YAL Machin and the Postal Museum by MA18 Underground and MA15 2nd Machin, the Sorting Britain overprint was removed as per the previous plan after service on the 1st January.
Reviewing my previous posts I failed to mention Dalston Kingsland 013002 where in both kiosks at least in early December there were R21YAL Greenery in both 1st and 2nd class slots.

  6. I note that most of the WH Smith machines I've visited recently are now 'card only'. 67 at Bath was available for cash purchases, as was 67 at Romford (if it had been working!) All the machines in Colchester had the coin slots crudely taped over with brown parcel tape. There seems to be a lack of staff to 'mind' the machines as well which leads to people queuing for the few counters that are open rather than use them. Chelmsford, helpfully, had a list pinned above each machine as to what to what transactions you could complete on the SSK , unfortunately ignored by the customers so the queue was still large with one counter open!

    ReplyDelete
  7. I too have noticed this increasingly of late at WH Smith branches.
Some branches I have visited have also left the staff logon barcode in a box above the kiosks with what must be regular users of the kiosks checking out themselves, indeed I have used the card myself when no staff member seems interested.
At only 1 Crown office branch (Cosham) this however been over a year ago the kiosks were set up not to do transactions that needed staff interaction that is signed for mail etc.
A fair number of offices covered there Trevor k67 at Romford seems to be a regular OOS as is k68 at Greenford.

  11. Bridgend has had K67 disconnected and stored in a 'side office' in the PO . K68 in situ but out of use and had been for some time awaiting parts I was told. On a brighter note, they had all the Welsh datamatrix definitives in stock and were happy to tear off the combinations I wanted. They said now that they are self adhesive there is a bigger appetite for them from customers and they always try and keep them in stock.

  14. From the IAR Website

The Fleet Air Arm Museum, based at RNAS Yeovilton near Ilchester, Somerset, is delighted to announce, in partnership with Royal Mail, an overprint from its Post and Go kiosk (A003), to commemorate the first Royal Navy pilot to fly in the F-35B Lightning II.

On the 10th of April 2013, Lt Cdr Ian Tidball became the first Royal Navy pilot to fly in the F-35B, as part of joint trials and instruction with U.S. Marines Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501. The Museum will mark this anniversary with a special Virtual Reality F-35 Headset Carrier Experience on the 10th April 2023. *Health and Safety restrictions apply to VR experience, with experience available those aged 13yrs+ or with parent/guardian permission. Free with a museum ticket.

To commemorate the anniversary, the Museum will launch two overprints from its Post and Go kiosk (A003). The kiosk will overprint ‘Carrier Experience’’ onto the Machin and Union Jack stamps.

The overprints, available from the 10th April until the 5th of May 2023, will be accessible from kiosk A003 – housed within the Museum’s Gift Shop, open to both visitors to the main Museum and members of the general public alike.

Crest of Jersey to feature on
    new Post & Go stamps
The Crest of Jersey will feature on six new Post & Go stamps to be issued by Jersey Post on 6 April 2023.

The Crest of Jersey first appeared on a set of Jersey Post & Go stamps issued in 2016. The six Post & Go stamps have been redesigned for 2023, bearing the official cypher of His Majesty King Charles III and depicting the Crest of Jersey in a new palette of colours. The names of all twelve of Jersey’s parishes are incorporated within the wave pattern on the left-hand portion of the stamps.

Post & Go stamps are self-adhesive stamp labels with the postage printed on demand. They can be bought either as single stamps or in strips of six. As well as being available to vend from the JE02 kiosk at Jersey’s main Broad Street post office and from the JE03 kiosk at Postal Headquarters, Rue Des Pres, The Crest of Jersey Collectors Strips will be available from Jersey Post’s back office B002 kiosk through the Philatelic Bureau.

  18. Two changes at the museums that started on the 3rd April rate change.
Shakespeare museum Symbolic Flowers stock is now exhausted and is replaced by Union Flag no pre 3rd April strips exist of this at the old rate as that reel was switched out of service.
At the Postal Museum the Mail by Air is now also available as a collector strips and all other values instead of just 1st class.

Although not yet on IAR website Shakespeare is due an overprint "First Folio" I believe on the 16th April this does need confirmation though as it is a Sunday.

On the grapevine I am hearing NCR collector strips will be updated to Europe 100g stamp within 2 weeks but don't hold your breath !!!!

    3. Given how little of that site is up to date - click on any 'Machine' or 'Location' item and you will find the latest news is a good 5 years ago (I haven't checked them all, so some may be newer - or older!)

The best person to ask is Bob Fothergill, but I'm sure someone else has his email address. Since Martin Fry left Royal Mail we have been short of even semi-accurate production information (he wasn't always right!)

    5. Really? But surely only to some people/organisations. I use WhatsApp for family; no way I would have heard.

That is the most ridiculous non-communication that Royal Mail have been involved in.

      Delete
    6. Must agree the IAR site is in serious need of updating and been kept up to date.
As for the cancellation of overprint possibly someone at Royal Mail had second thoughts of applying overprint to QEII stamps I would have thought it appropriate to apply to the Union Flag stamp though rather than the Machin.
Public misconception is another thing for example the screensaver on kiosk A001 at Postal Museum shows Charles III 1st class definitives it is there as part of the exhibition that is on at the moment but there has been the expectation that Charles III stamps are available for sale from it.
My first hearing about cancellation was email sent from postal museum who they have contact details for that are regular visitors followed shortly afterwards by the Whats App message, Bob Fothergill does have my contact details but these messages are mostly sent to key account holders who he knows to be regular purchasers this is more of a courtesy rather than an official Royal Mail communication.

    7. Thanks Malcolm.

I used to have regular correspondence with Bob (and met him at Stampex and other new locations) but not in the last few years. I suspect since I stopped going to Stampex and P&G became such a minefield, with negative comments from me, he either decided to drop me, or he has overlooked this blog as a useful news outlet.

Fortunately many more people do see it as a useful place to share P&G information, for which I (and many readers) am immensely grateful.

  43. To answer Ian's question from the 2022 review of the year, "I wonder just who buys the stamps from these machines apart from Post and Go collectors, especially outside the main tourist season". It seems not many !

Shakespeare Visitor centre 13/07/23 Session Number 7787

Shakespeare Visitor Centre 09/06/23 (FDI) Session Number 7632 (highest currently seen on eBay)

    So 155 transactions in 44 days = 3.5 uses a day.

  76. From a conversation with the gentleman who kindly replaced the expired roll of Anniversary Machins today at the Postal Museum, the main reason the machines are going is because they don't make much money (for the Postal Museum at least) and they spend more time dealing with issues with them for the small amount they do generate!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks Trevor. I suspect the PM has far more activity on its machines than any of the Naval Museums, Steam, or Shakespeare. If only Royal Mail had adopted the idea I had 6 years ago and produced local versions or commemorative versions alongside regular stamps, as is done in Spain and Ireland.
      https://blog.norphil.co.uk/2016/03/post-and-go-update-scottish-congress.html

I also wrote in the same post:
"There can be very little money to be made by the museums from the sale of Post and Go stamps. Even when selling by mail order at a price higher than face value, the labour costs involved in getting the stamps and processing the orders cannot be worthwhile unless they get a very high proportion of the face value of the stamps, something which is most unlikely (and which Royal Mail is not likely to reveal). "

The situation was made clear to me from the start.
The supply of Machin50 stock was maybe not sufficient to meet demand and that if that came to pass Machin head stock would be used in the kiosk.
The final reel of Machin50 (not full roll) was inserted at approx 1400 just before I left the museum after 4 hours there.
I have seen a scan of the receipts for the stock purchased and am therefore aware of the value of sales made although of course I will not disclose it here.
The mail by bike stock was also exhausted but this reel was then switched out of service.

    2. And on the Postal Museum Final Throes post on 8 November the Press Release included this:

      Further information:
Please note that the final overprint wording may still be subject to change. As these are the museum’s final stocks, availability is subject to demand and may run out before the dates listed above.
