Royal Mail Stamp Programme for 2025

The Royal Mail stamp programme for 2025 can now be published and all those who contributed to our competition can now see how accurate their predictions were.  (Answer - not very!  Four readers sent in lists which contained 3 of the subjects on the list (including Christmas so really only two), and one of those had a suggestion which may be a third.

In fact some subjects not included in the list had more or as many supporters, with Jane Austen having 4. Nobody got the two Music Legends correct, and only one person suggested the right TV programme, although two others were also suggested.  One subject was suggested by 7 readers and is included in the programme.  (More details below.)

The subjects as listed below are as Royal Mail provided them to us in autumn 2024,, updated in spring 2025.  I have added (in brackets) associated anniversaries which may or may not be the reason behind the issue.

This year fewer of the stamp issues are media/entertainment related, leaving more (including Christmas) more directly relevant.

This programme should be made public at the same time as the Vicar of Dibley stamps which are on a separate post. 

So this year we have two UK television programmes and another Music Giants - an Australian.  There are some very obvious anniversaries, although whether the anniversaries will be specified on the stamps remains to be seen.  

Many people think that Monopoly is a British invention because the original UK version was produced by John Waddington, but that was under licence from US toy and gamemaker Parker Brothers.  But it's hard to see the Peanuts link with the UK.   

But as can be seen from the previous British stamps shown, many of the topics have already been covered in greater or lesser detail in the past. 

Other subjects which might have been covered, and which were suggested by readers ...

- The 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen (yes, she's appeared before, but this is a worthy anniversary.)

- The Centenary of John Logie Baird's first demonstrations of  Television.

- The Women's Rugby World Cup and the Snooker World Cup.

- Television soap EastEnders, and sitcom Fawlty Towers - 40th anniversary of first broadcasts.

- under Music Giants, the following were suggested: Oasis, Bob Marley, Kate Bush, George Michael, Bay City Rollers.

- thematic suggestions included Art Deco Buildings, Coins, Sports Cars, Reintroduced Species, Small Pets, the Anglo-Saxons, Reptiles. (Sorry if I missed any!)

I'm sure there will be a significant number of Prestige Stamp Books and Collector Sheets.  If you are still buying everything, it will be an even more expensive year.  I'll do my best to continue to provide you with all the information I can.

Post and Go news in 2022

As I mentioned in November, I now aim to have a Post and Go post (and comment thread) for each year, so this is the first post for 2022.  Malcolm has already provided a comment on the November post about what happened when The Postal Museum re-opened, but I have copied this here so that we have something to start the year with.  And of course it has a glitch - well an oddity I think.  Read on!

Postal Museum changes 1 January 2022

Reader Malcolm reports: After service on the 31st December, the Winter Greenery stock was removed and from Saturday 1st January 2022 it was replaced with Union Flag undated stock for 1st class and MA15 2nd class Machin, but without the Wish You Were Here inscription.  This did continue on the 1st class, ending at close of business on Sunday 2nd January.

The museum was then closed on its usual Monday and Tuesday, reopening on Wednesday 5th with the Wish You Were Here inscription now removed from the 1st class Machin, so therefore a new variety of strip was available, being the first time with the Europe and Worldwide Large strips have been available without a commemorative overprint.

For the first half hour of operation on 5th, the stock was MA13, and it was then replaced with MA14 stock subsequently.

UPDATE 19 January: The Commonwealth Stamps Opinion blog reports the latest Post and Go imprints from Jersey and Guernsey. 

The Jersey issue was actually on 6 December 2021 and marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the island's Finance Industry, as it was 1961 when banks started establishing offshore branches to meet the growing demands of British customers living or working abroad. The additional inscription is applied to all six colours of the Jersey Arms stamps.

On 17 February Jersey Post will issue a new set of 'Harvest of the Sea' Post and Go stamps in six new designs. (Via Gulfmann ATM Collection blog).

UPDATE 16 February. Thanks to Malcolm B for news from The Postal Museum regarding its output for the London 2022 International Exhibition.  

The London 2022 inscription is on the 1st class Machin stamps on machine A001 in The Postal Museum and on the Post Office London Railway stamp on machine A013 in Mail Rail.  It will run from next Saturday (19th February) to the end of Saturday 26th February.

Update 4 April - Postal Museum

A new exhibition is running at the Postal Museum from 30 March 2022 – 1 January 2023 entitled Sorting Britain: The Power of Postcodes. This delves into the Post Office innovation that revolutionised how post was processed, sorted, and delivered and its unintended outcomes for life in Britain.

Thanks to Malcolm we can show the Post & Go strips that are associated with this exhibition, which have an additional 'Sorting Britain' imprint.  

He writes: Update on Postal Museum went ahead as planned Machin was MA13 stock and Flag MA19 stock (first time here). Mail by Air went in as R19 stock and was available as a first class strip however also available were all the other values of a collector strip although this was not available as an option.

UPDATE 3 June 2022.  To mark the Platinum Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II the Postal Museum is resurrecting the Machin Anniversary set with a new imprint: their (edited) press release:

The Postal Museum is set to release a new inscription on its Post & Go machines to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.

The inscription “The Postal Museum/The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee” will be printed on the multicoloured “Machin 50th anniversary” stamps and will run from 3 June to 1 July 2022.

Each of six anniversary Machin stamps is a different colour and will be overprinted with the standard UK first class (up to 100g) value. They will temporarily replace the existing “Mail by Air” stamps for the duration of the Jubilee inscription. These stamps will be available from the Post & Go machine in the museum’s welcome space, either singly or in strips of six.

The inscription “Mail Rail/The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee” will be printed on standard “Machin first class” stamps of all values. These stamps will be available as a collector’s strip of six and as individual values from the Post & Go machine in the Mail Rail’s welcome space from 3 June to 1 July 2022.

The Postal Museum will be joining other Royal Mail Post & Go sites in offering this Jubilee inscription - the National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN) site at HMS Victory in Portsmouth, NMRN Submarine Museum in Gosport, NMRN Explosion Museum also in Gosport, Fleet Air Arm Museum in Ilchester, HMS Trincomalee in Hartlepool, The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford Upon Avon and STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway in Swindon.

Doug couldn't have missed Mike by many minutes judging by the session numbers (7821 & 0840) of his strips.  Both reported it quiet (apart from families visiting the museum) and Mike said that he "didn’t see any of the ‘usual’ dealers there."

UPDATE 8 June: My thanks to AH who writes:

Thanks to your blog, I bought six of the Platinum Jubilee Post & Go stamps on Saturday and had one of them used on the envelope.  It was cancelled with a cds for 4th June and also received an example of the Platinum Jubilee slogan on its travels (but this is not very clear).

The thanks are, of course, equally due to other readers and contributors.  This is the stamp, which we can see comes from machine A009 which is still, as far as I know, at the Shakespeare Centre in Stratford.  We have recorded past instances of Shakespeare output with their logo and the new inscription occupying the same position on the stamp which is probably why the logo is missing here, giving no indication of where the stamp was printed.  Are other museum outputs like this on this occasion?

Post and Go error news

There really isn't much new to report, with even the news of removals and openings/insatllations slowing down probably as Post Office Ltd looks towards the next generation of SSKs and Horizon.

DP reminds me of the 'lurch to the left' that was reported by several people over two years ago and reported here.  It was reported as far back as 2015, from Bury St Edmunds, Saltash, Tunbridge Wells and Portsmouth.  It was said to "affect all values in the strip bit you only get one shift per strip of six. If you buy 36 stamps in one transaction, you will end up with a shift for each value" though the accuracy of this was disputed in another comment.

Anyway, DP has sent these examples from Hounslow on the Game of Thrones stamps:

Additionally in the left-hand strip the Euro 100g/World 20g designation has a further error - "World 20g omitted"

Museums

Now that Museums are re-opening it might be opportune to check out their machines for software updates or lack of them.  Mike C sent this example from Swindon's SteamGWR showing the previous service indicators issued on 12/04/2021 - and charged at £10.11.  Current worth is actually £10.64 I believe!

Postal Museum Post and Go Update - Exceptional Opening!

I wrote about The Postal Museum re-opening here, and several people have written or commented that with the museum only opening Thursday to Sunday the Winter Greenery could not be on sale on Tuesday 3rd November as announced.

I have now heard from MB as follows:

From TPM IT & System Manager Ian Tolley:

Just a quick note to confirm that the Postal Museum welcome space will be open from 10:30am on Tuesday for Post & Go purchases if you are thinking of coming in for the Winter Greenery on A001.

So money talks.  It will certainly make it easier for collectors (and dealers) who know in advance,  to not have members of public wanting access as they might at other times.  But it is pity that nobody at the TPM thought to look at the calendar and provide this information with their general press release earlier this week.  It's certainly like a weekend afterthought, but I suspect it's just a case of "oh we always intended to do this, was it not clear in the information provided?"

 

Machines and locations

Stuart Leigh reports that the Mail Rail kiosk has not moved across the road as TPM said it would be. Instead A012 (last used at Autumn Stampex 2017) has been installed in the Postal Museum entrance hall and re-designated Mail Rail.  But more interestingly on the Underground Railway stamps being dispensed from it have a date code of MA18, whereas the Postal Museum kiosk has R19YAL. Also the stock could be digitally produced (clarification awaited when they have been examined).

Opening Day

I would have a picture but...  MC sent a report of his less than happy experience on day one.

The perfect set I had I have put on a FDC.

What I do have as a mint set is a strip made up of 8 stamps with the first one being a bit screwed up and not printed fully, the second stamp has the 'technical' data line missing as the print has 'slipped down', three & four are blanks, and 5-8 are as per expected.  This was seemingly a 'problem' throughout the period I was there which the Museum staff member was unable to fix. I don't necessarily think it would be a good idea to put a copy (at least of mine) on the web!

The big surprise to most, if not all, attendees was that the 'Mail by Air' issue has been replaced with Flags.

Year codes are - Mail Coach = MA16, Underground Railway (UR) = R19, 1st = MA14, 2nd = MA15, Flag = None? (I certainly cannot see one!)  

The other kiosk had UR = MA 18 & 2nd Machin MA14.

Winter Greenery 3 November update

My thanks to MC for these pictures from today's events at the Postal Museum.  

The Postal Museum machine had Winter Greenery in A001:  1st is R17 & 2nd is CL17 (Machin is MA16, Mail Rail is R19 & Flag has no date).

Postal Museum re-opening: Post & Go arrangements

From the Postal Museum an email from the museum via MB:

Both Post and Go machines will be located in The Postal Museum foyer and will be available to use without a ticket to the museum. There will be no entry to the Mail Rail building without a ticket, but the machine usually at Mail Rail has been placed in the TPM building. It will be one in one out for use of the machines and doors open at 10.30am.

Guests will be asked to sanitise hands before they use the machine and to scan the NHS test and trace QR code located by the machine. If they do not have the app, they may be asked to leave contact details depending on the time spent within the museum.

Please note the 29th of October is the first day the museum is open to the public and we will be very busy. We advise arriving as early, the machine will be accessible from 10:30am when the building opens to the public.

So far I can find nothing on the Museum website about the machine relocation or the new exhibition 'overprint' (inscription).

UPDATE 27 October

Thank you to all the people - including the Postal Museum - who have sent the press release about the Post and Go stamps.  I still can't find anything on their website.

On Thursday 29 October 2020, The Postal Museum will reopen both Post & Go machines with stamps featuring a new overprint celebrating 150 years of the British postcard. Both kiosks will be located at The Postal Museum’s Welcome Space and no admission ticket will be required to access the services. However, there will be admission to other areas with a ticket booked online in advance.

Additional safety measures are being introduced such as a hand sanitizer station, a one-in-one-out access and information on how to scan the NHS Test and Trace QR code located near the machines.

The machines will vend the Mail Coach stamps of all values with a new overprint “Postcards 150” celebrating 2020 as a year of celebration marking 150 years of the British postcard.

Museums Post and Go News - the floodgates open

With military and other museums now reopening after the pandemic lockdown Royal Mail have decided to allow some special inscriptions to be added to the stamps sold from their Post and Go machines.  Updates below in red are 14 October.

The Postal Museum

As already announced, the Virtual Stampex 2020 inscription will be added to stamps from 1 October.  Information from Royal Mail says that this will be until 12 October and be on the PO London Railway stamps, rather than the Machin head that he Museum shows.  Clarification has been sought!

UPDATE 6 October: Royal Mail have confirmed that the Machin head was available not the Railway, but continue to insist that it is available until 12 October.  Given that the Museum is closed (reopening on 29th) the point is moot.  You can't get them in person and when the Museum choose to print them, take orders, and send them out would seem to be irrelevant.

Although closure meant that they missed the actual anniversary, the Museum is planning an exhibition on the 150th Anniversary of the introduction of the Postcard.  The inscription Postcards 150 will be on the Mail Coach stamps from 29 October 2020 to 30 September 2021, subject to confirmation of the exhibition dates.  (This will be in addition to the regular The Postal Museum inscription.)

For Christmas, the Museum will use the Winter Greenery stamps with the regular The Postal Museum inscription from 3 November 2020 to 1 January 2021.

Fleet Air Arm Museum, RNAS Yeovilton

The Museum reopened on 14 August, opening Wednesday to Sunday only.  This year 11 November falls on a Wednesday and from then until 30 November their machine will have the Taranto 80 inscription on the Union Flag stamp and Taranto 80 + logo on the Machin head stamp.

Note as with most museums, entry is by advance booking only so anybody planning to attend to get these should contact the museum to find out what arrangements have been made.

Stuart Leigh provided these images of the FAAM Union Flag, which is a new printing with year code MA19 (not RO19YAL) and is digital - believed to be for the first time.

Steam GWR Swindon

This museum is open 7 days a week, but as usual it is timed entry and advance booking only.  I can't see anything on their website which mentions it's the 20th anniversary of their opening but that's what the Post and Go machine is telling us!

The additional inscription Celebrates 20 Years will be applied to the Locomotive and Machin head stamps from 12 October to 31 December 2020.

Thanks to Mike C who made the trip to Swindon for the Steam GWR restart.  "I phoned the Museum before setting off given the travel distance and they said they had been very busy first thing and had already had to restock the kiosk."

The Machin is MA13 and the Locomotive is MA16. Note that they only exist with the Zone 1&3 indicator.

Correction:  KH reports "
I have a receipt from the Museum dated 17/9 /20 with both strips having Zone 1-3".

Incidentally none of these apart from the Postal Museum Stampex overprint is mentioned on the IAR website, which is quite out of date in many respects, showing how hard it is to keep a website updated even if you are at the heart of things!

The real Post and Go news for autumn 2019

We have now received comprehensive official information from Royal Mail about what is happening in the Post and Go world.  We are not stocking these, but thought that collectors would be interested to know what the plans are. See also the note at the foot of the post about other plans/

Post and Go Overprints:

We are pleased to be able to confirm a new series of overprints for selected Post & Go kiosk locations. Included in this list is the relocation of kiosk A005 from East Anglia Railway Museum to Mail Rail @ The Postal Museum, which went live this week with a positive early response from collectors. Update 5 November:
Also from Chris's sales on eBay, the Shakespeare double-overprint error reported by 'Anonymous' (note this is on MA17 stock).

This has not only 'Shakespeare Birthplace Trust' 'but the expected 'Shakespeare 1564'.  A nice little bonus for those collectors and dealers who can get or make arrangements to get the stock.  The Shakespeare 1616 is on undated Machin stock.

Update 6 November
Based on this example from eBay seller gbphil09 it might have been better to have run some trial prints before going live at FAAM on A003, which is missing the right side of Concorde, the plane and the word, and most of the 0,

We have received several reports that the FAAM machine A1003 was working correctly at the start of business.

Post Office Self-Service Kiosks 
We understand from Norwich's main post office (in WHSmith) that no poppies will be installed there and that Winter Greenery will be used from 5 November, the date of issue of the Christmas stamps.

Update 4 November
Information has now been received that the Winter Greenery will be in all SSK offices from tomorrow, 5 November.  I expect old stock to be used but some new stock to have been printed.  Reports awaited!

Later:
Thanks to JG I can now show the 2019 printings of the Winter Greenery stamps.   Cambridge city PO "had been supplied with boxes of Winter Greenery stamps for use from today, and most were 2019, although some were 2018 (left over stock as you suspected!)"  But not all branches have these stamps available (See comments).


These show CL19S on the 2nd class and R19AL on the 1st.

As we have news here about new printings of Winter Greenery it seems appropriate to include the 2019 reprint of the Machin definitive post and go stamps as well.  The background printing is now very light so I have digitally enhanced this image from DP showing the 1st class R19YAL coding below 'Class' found at Richmond, Surrey.

Update 21 November from Royal Mail:
Following the publication of the Quarterly overprint plan for Post & Go last month, we have received extensive feedback requesting a Christmas stamp. 
As the 1st Class Winter Greenery stamps are being introduced elsewhere, it will be added to the Mail Rail kiosk, replacing the Machin definitive and will run from 2nd December to 31 December 2019.
