So where are the 6 x 1st Jubilee booklets ?

... and was there any point in producing them?

It's been an interesting year for definitives, with two special issues running in a sort of parallel existence.

The London 2012 definitives were issued in January, to be replaced a month later when the Diamond Jubilee Machins were issued.  The intention was that these would be used until July when the games started, then the London 2012 stamps would be re-distributed, being replaced again by the Jubilee stamps when the games were over.

That made a lot of sense for the sheet stamps, but was less straightforward for the booklet stamps.  The London 2012 stamps were issued only in booklets of 6, whilst the Jubilee stamps were issued only in booklets of 12, so they could run side-by-side.  But post office branches tend to get new booklets only when they are ordered and, if they had plentiful stocks of previous stamp booklets, receipt of the new stamps would be delayed until they were needed.

And then there was the surprise issue of a 1st class gold book (M12L) which had been packed up in December 2011!  Why was this even produced if the London 2012 and Jubilee booklets were going to be issued in January and February?

As it turned out the greater than normal increase in postage rates in the spring meant that many stamps were purchased before the rise, money in stamps for postage producing a better return than money in the bank, and there were shortages in many post offices.  Country definitives were distributed from stores - even to the wrong countries we understand - when Machins had been ordered, business sheets were broken up and sold as singles or blocks.

After that, many people had enough stamps to last them for years and then we were distracted by the Olympics and Paralympics.  And there were gold medal 1st class stamps to use.  However, when that was all over, it was back to the normal programme.

A mixed 6 x 1st booklet of Jubilee Machins and Scottish Locomotives was issued on 27 September.  The Christmas booklets of 12 1st or 2nd were due for issue on 6 November, and the new colour stamps, including booklets of 6 and 12 x 1st were scheduled for 3 January 2013.

But there was still one Jubilee variant missing, the one coded MSND.  The booklet of 6 x 1st Jubilee stamps with this code were scheduled for philatelic release on 1 October, and released they were - from Edinburgh to collectors and dealers.

As far as I can tell, nobody has found these in any post office branches yet, except the designated philatelic ones. Many branches are still selling London 2012 booklets.  Indeed we were told that these had been recalled after the games: one office which returned them and then ordered replacements were supplied with - yes, more London 2012 booklets!  (It has even been suggested that the Post Office Supplies Depot at Swindon has not received any Jubilee books of 6, which might explain why they are not in post offices.)

Supermarkets and corner shops could be selling them, but they will have had Christmas booklets since early November.

So if you know of any outlets - Post Offices, corner shops, newsagents, office suppliers, or supermarkets - which have or have had these for sale, please let us know.

Definitive stamp booklet - 6 x 1st Jubilee definitives - 1 October 2012

We can now show the latest 6 x 1st class retail booklet which will be issued to Post Office branches and other retail outlets to replace the Olympic definitive booklets which were reintroduced in some places during the summer. The official release date is 1 October.

The booklet is printed by Walsall Security Printers, with cylinder numbers W1 blue, phosphor, and iridescent in that order.  The source code is MSND to the right of the Queen's head.

Cylinder booklets appear to be hard to find in initial stocks.

Close up of the coding on the stamps, thanks to Chris and Richard:

We will obtain a few first day covers for these new definitive stamps.

UPDATE 29 Oct, from the comments attached:
I was able to order this from Talents House with no problems. The order code is UB355.

We have a very small number of First Day Covers for these on sale now. If when you click on this link there is no entry on our shop, that means they are all sold - SORRY!

Christmas:  6 November 2012

The Christmas stamps this year have been designed by Webb and Webb using new illustrations by Axel Scheffler - the artist who illustrated the children’s classic The Gruffalo. As usual the stamps will be in standard and large letter definitive size and self adhesive.  There will also be a conventionally-gummed miniature sheet containing all stamps, booklets of 12 x 1st and 12 x 2nd stamps, and a Smilers Generic sheet with (updated) 4 x 2nd, 4 x 1st, 2 x 86p and 2 x £1.28 stamps.

Correction: As Brian points out in the comment, this year's prices will be  87p, £1.28 and £1.90.  The pictures shown are the preliminary ones we were provided with in February.
And as Trevor pointed out, the date we were originally given by Royal Mail and which I used without checking the calendar, was Sunday 11th.  Now confirmed as Tuesday 6th.

Diamond Jubilee Machin & Wilding from Prestige Stamp Book

I should have provided these Diamond Jubilee PSB images much earlier, my apologies to Chris who sent them on 2 June.

The first shows clearly the MPND code on the Jubilee Machin from the 31 May PSB.  The other shows phosphor bands well clear of the perforations on the definitive pane in the booklet.   In my experience the shortness at the top is not matched by phosphor over-running the perforations at the foot of the pane, so the overall height of the phosphor band is less than the gap between the perforations.

If I could scan like this I could tell whether our stock is really as short as that!

Diamond Jubilee retail booklets full of errors

The Diamond Jubilee Commemorative retail booklet has been delivered and we can show these images, courtesy of Chris H.

As expected, the source code is MCND in the usual position.

Cylinder numbers W1 start above the TH (iridescent), the E+space (phosphor) and then diamond blue, black, cyan, yellow and magenta.  The diamond blue is outlined in reversed-out white as shown:

Quite a high proportion of the booklets have phosphor band short at the foot, to a greater or lesser degree.  Some are almost 1mm clear of the top of the perforation hole.  This also affects the commemorative stamp, as shown.

However, the 'invisible' phosphor is not the only registration problem that Walsall has had with this booklet as this picture shows, with a unusually large shift of the magenta:

We don't yet have the sheet stamps or the prestige books but will report on them next week.

1st class GOLD M12L Machin Stamp booklets

Well here's a turn up for the booklets!  Well spotted to Ian R who noticed this for sale on eBay.

It's the 1st class gold from booklets with M12L code.  According to the seller the wrapper has a packing date of 22/12/2011.   It also exists from the same batch with a short phosphor band at the foot.  We don't have any stock yet.  My PO received a supply of Jubilee 12 x 1st this morning so the chances of getting any here seem very remote.

Post Office Ltd instruct withdrawal of all Large Letter Jubilee stamps on the day after 'issue'

Further to our encouraging message on Monday regarding the release of the Large Letter Diamond Jubilee Machin Definitive Stamps we understand that Post Office branches were instructed today to remove from sale all Large Letter Diamond Jubilee stamps!

However given that many branches have no 1st gold Large Letter stamps - and I'm told that some at least had a similar message last week(!) - it seems unlikely that they will comply as to do so would mean that they were unable to sell those stamps to customers.  If stocks of the gold stamps are available at the stores in Swindon, it shows an alarming ineptitude in stock control.

Despite the clear authorisation by Post Office Ltd two days ago, Royal Mail are suggesting that the current sales are unauthorised.   If this is the degree of co-operation when both are part of one business, what level of co-operation will there be when Royal Mail is privatised?

PS: At the time of writing, Royal Mail say that the 1st class Large Jubilee stamps will be on the same first day cover as the new airmail tariff stamps (87p, £1.28 and £1.90) dated 25 April 2012.

Update 16:46 28 March on twitter: "Hi Ian, we are still selling the Large Letter Diamond Jubilee stamps."

Diamond Jubilee Large Letter Machin officially on sale 27 March 2012

Post Office Ltd have officially confirmed that the Large Letter Diamond Jubilee Machin definitive stamp will be on sale at all branches from tomorrow, 27 March.

We believe that, aside from those branches that are already selling them, the Business Sheet and Retail Booklets will not be on sale automatically tomorrow as branches will only receive these when the order them to replenish stocks.  But you should, from tomorrow, find the counter sheet stamps are available even if the branch still has stocks of gold 1st class Large.

We still have no information about the official position regarding Royal Mail first day covers for this stamp.

Regarding the FDCs we understand that the official FDC will bear 87p, 1st Large, £1.28 and £1.90 in that order, reflecting the 1st Large new value of 90p even though when issued it's face value will be only 75p!

Update: here is our FDC with the three different Large Letter Jubilee stamps.

Post Offices sell Large Diamond Jubilee Machin stamps early.

As mentioned earlier in the blog, and on our website, the Diamond Jubilee

"1st class Large versions will be issued in March or April when the new tariff stamps are issued."

However, intent and actuality are not always the same thing, and as PO Supplies Department at Swindon have sent these to some Post Office branches already, some of those are selling them already.  This one came from a post office branch:

With the official first day of issue some weeks away, we will be interested to hear of any reports of these appearing on your mail!  Leave a comment !  (Thanks as usual to RP for the picture.)

Jubilee definitives Part 2, and change for 50p - but not yet!

With the Diamond Jubilee MS and 1st class definitive (in its various forms) being issued tomorrow, we can now confirm that the Large Letter versions - counter sheet, business sheet and booklet of 4 - will be issued on Tuesday 27 March.

On the same date the 50p Machin definitive issued on 17 February 2009 in grey will be replaced by a new stamp in 'rust', a colour which has been used before.  No reason for this change has been announced.  It is close in colour to the diamond blue 1st class but not, I would have thought, close enough to warrant a change.

An informed source has said that this will have a single phosphor band,

A more informed source has now said that there will be no change to the 50p colour during 2012, but the colour may change next year.

Another source has said that at the end of this year the diamond-blue 1st class will be changed to post-office red.  Does this mean more colour changes - and for what purpose?*

At this time the new postage rates have not been announced, and they are unlikely to be announced until near the end of this month, for implementation at the end of April or in early May, so this colour change would not seem to be caused by the tariff change.  We'll publish the official explanation when we get it.

The 50p grey has not so far been reprinted in 2010/11 and so only exists from counter sheets with no year code.

Diamond Blue 1st class Machin - Security Codes

We're reliably informed that security codes are present on the Diamond Jubilee Machin definitives from booklets - and probably business sheets and possibly the miniature sheet.

The booklet code is the letter T as usual (for Twelve).  The changed text is behind the hair 'bun' on the Queen's head where MOND reads MTND.  We do not expect any year codes as this colour will only be issued in 2012.

The code for the Miniature sheet is MMND in the same place, and I think we can safely assume that the code for business sheets is  MBND.

Pictures as soon as we have them.

Friday 13th - lucky for some!

We've had a report that a sheet of Diamond Jubilee definitives was bought from an office in Scotland this morning - over 3 weeks early!  Surely they can't have sold all their Olympic/Paralympic definitives already?

We can now show the actual Diamond Jubilee definitive - thanks to James for sending this:

The Glasgow postmark uses roman numerals for the month, so this reads 13 I 2012

Thanks to James also for this image which better shows the security overlay:

If you find any in post offices, or receive any early-release covers we would be pleased to picture them here - with your address blurred, of course.

Diamond Jubilee definitive confusion at Tallents House clarified

We have an update on the situation regarding the Diamond Jubilee definitive distribution, as reported earlier (see below).

Royal Mail have now confirmed at 1445 hrs today:
"As we are sending the Diamond Jubilee Miniature sheet to all regular order DS customers we opted not to send the new Diamond Jubilee 1st Class definitive as an individual item to avoid duplication and additional costs.  We can still fulfill requests from customers requiring individual stamps, formats or colour blocks on an ad-hoc basis  Any orders fulfilled under these circumstances will have the P&P waived."

I had checked the situation with Royal Mail Tallents House on Monday 19th, and was told that the normal 'ad-hoc' order charges would apply to any supplementary orders for the  definitive stamp from sheets.
I welcome this statement of Royal Mail's new position and am pleased that collectors, especially those without access to UK Post Offices will be able to buy the definitive sheet stamp at face value without incurring additional costs.

-------------------
(Friday December 16th) A reader tells of his experience with Royal Mail's Tallents House 'Philatelic Bureau' on this new stamp.  His standing order statement was 46p short, lacking a single from the counter sheet:

After a certain amount of confusion I was informed that there will be no counter sheets, but they could supply a single from the business sheets, and a block of six if required.

He suggested, not surprisingly, that our website page and this blog might be inaccurate.  I checked the information we had received from Royal Mail Philatelic...

The associated stamp formats are a
POL counter sheet of 1st standard size,
100 x 1st business sheet, 12 x 1st book
as shown here.

As from 6th February 2012 this new
Diamond Jubilee Definitive 12 x 1st
Class book will be available and remain
so throughout the Queen’s jubilee year
thereby replacing the gold Definitive.

Later in March the 4 x 1st Large book, 1st
Large as a POL Counter sheet and the 50 x
1st Large Business sheets will be issued
(POL = Post Office Ltd, ie counters)

Our reporter was told by Tallents House that because of computer problems they could not see his statement at that time. Those same computer problems may have led to the misunderstanding quoted above in blue.

If you have a standing order, or want to order this from Royal Mail, the stock code for the stamps from counter sheets is DS461. Normal 'one-off' handling charges apply. (update 21 December - no further handling charges will apply.)

The Business Sheet is DS961, and the booklet is UB340.  These last two of course can only be supplied as complete sheets or booklets by Royal Mail, but we will be supplying them as singles if you don't want to shell out £46 and £5.52.  And we'll have the Large Letter versions in March.

Diamond Blue 1st class Machin for Jubilee, and coin/banknote link

We can now show the stamps which will be issued next year to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.  The definitive will be 'diamond blue' and the preliminary images show the words 'DIAMOND JUBILEE' continuously in the style of the current security print, but on the background only.

If we have correctly understood the information provided the following will be issued on 6 February 2012:
Counter sheet, Business sheet x 100, 12 x 1st booklet. The booklet will be on sale throughout the year replacing the 1st gold definitive.  (Whether this applies also to the counter and business sheets isn't clear.)

In March the following will be issued:
4 x 1st Large letter, 1st Large counter sheet, 1st large x 50 business sheet.
There is no indication of any variation in the inscription to indicate the source of the stamps.  The stamps will have full security features.

Also on 6 February there is a Jubilee miniature sheet with 6 x 1st class stamps with designs taken from banknotes, coins and similar to the Wilding stamp:

The designs are:

• Wilding Definitve.
• £1 note portrait by Robert Austin first issued in 1960.
• £5 note portrait by Harry Eccleston first issued 1971.
• Pre-decimal coinage head by Mary Gillick.
• Arnold Machin’s decimal currency head first introduced in 1968.
• New Jubilee Machin Definitive Stamp.

I'm reminded, of course, that the bronze penny 1st class stamp is another Machin stamp, though not as we know it.  Thanks to MachinMania. By the way, the Gillick head on the old 6d coin is surely the source of the profile head used on GB commemoratives since the 1960s - and on the regional pictorial definitives, giving rise to the 'ribbon' variations on some stamps.

Definitive printing dates, cylinder numbers, and speculation (updated)

News has reached us from various sources concerning printing dates and cylinder numbers on Machin and country definitives.

Country stamps.
The new printings by Cartor released at the end of March had C1 x 6 cylinder numbers (4 colour process, silver, and phosphor).  The printing dates - not printed by ink-jet but apparently engraved on the cylinder - are:

England - 24/01/11    Ireland - 24/01/11
Scotland - 26/01/11   N Ireland - 27/01/11

Recently the England stamps have been found dated 25/01/11 - with black cylinder C2.  It's the black cylinder that prints the date in the right margin:

The England £1.10 stamp is, of course, printed in two columns alongside 2 columns of 68p stamps, so that value will also exist with the new date and cylinder number.   The Scotland 68p stamp exists dated 27/01/11 with black cylinder C2; once again this indicates that the £1.10 should also exists in this form - the Scotland £1.10 has now been seen.

Machin definitive
Although the low-value self-adhesive stamps were printed in January this year, some printings for the stamps with ordinary gum may not have appeared in post offices yet - and Royal Mail said that stocks of gummed stamps will be exhausted before the self-adhesives are sent to POs.  A late printing of the 20p emerald has appeared - 15/09/10 - with a D5 cylinder number, replacing the D4 printed on 10/03/08.

Will we lose gold in Olympic year Back in 1997 the colour of the 1st class stamp changed to gold in honour of the Queen's Golden Wedding Anniversary.  They reverted back to orange, and then there was the Millennium version, and in 2002 the colour again changed to gold coincident with the Queen's Golden Jubilee - and it has remained gold ever since.

When two or three collectors get together discussing modern developments in stamps, all sorts of speculative thoughts are voiced.  The Diamond Jubilee occurs next year and Royal Mail have already announced the issue of a new definitive in February, replacing the current gold one, but no details have yet been supplied.

It's been suggested that there will be no point in reverting to gold at the end of 2012: so it is more than possible that the Diamond Jubilee 1st class definitive will be the default - in counter sheets, business sheets, retail booklets, prestige stamp books and coils.  It's logical that the Large Letter stamp will also change from gold.

Anyone want to guess what the change will be? Bright silver for diamonds?  Royal Purple?  Colour with a silver security overprint (seems unlikely, they still think this is a secret security device!)?
And if there are no more gold stamps, will the Arnold Machin Centenary sheet hold the last printing of gold 1st class stamps?

Your speculation is invited - use the comment box!
