New Catalogue Machin Security Definitive Stamps

We are pleased to announce that the new Norvic Checklist of Machin Security Definitive Stamps is now available free of charge to all collectors and dealers.

Designed to fit the gap between the Stanley Gibbons GB Concise Catalogue and the extreme detail of some other lists, this identifies all the values with all the source and year codes, cross-referenced to SG numbers and Royal Mail product codes.  Source booklet numbers are also included to assist in precise identification.

Table showing 2nd class counter sheet listing

Dates of issue or earliest known dates (EKD) of appearance are shown.  Over the summer the list has been checked by a number of customers and dealers, and many corrections made, but more information is waiting to be discovered, especially on dates.  Checking stamps on ordinary mail may yet reveal that stamps were actually in post offices or other retail outlets earlier than previously thought so the list is always subject to change.  But it is totally up to date with the latest discovery, the 2p M14L (see below).

Some collectors (and dealers) record these stamps in greater detail than we do, for instance according to the size of the gap in the security slits, according to the shape of the perforation, or the direction of printing.  This doesn't claim to be a complete list of Security Machins according to those criteria, but it does list all the basic stamps - and a few extras.

The Norvic numbers are used in our webshop, and we hope that this will help customers to find what they are looking for an fill the gaps.

To download a copy of the checklist go to Dropbox.

Bulk Mailers using stamps - a register, with your help

I was given a mailing from Taylor's Port today, a 2nd class blue stamp with a wavy line laser or ink-jet cancellation.  I was hopeful that they were using the same stamps as the Sunday Times Wine Club, but it was not the case.  This is the 'Sunday Times' stamp:

I thought a register of Business Direct Mail users and what stamps they use might be helpful.  so:

April 2011 Royal Mail Royal Wedding - 1st class SA coil 2009 - MRIL MAIL
July 2011  Sunday Times Wine Club - 2nd class SA coil 2010 - MRIL MA10
?? 2011  Taylor's Port - 2nd class Business sheet 2010 - MBIL MA10
---- 2011  One of the credit card companies (agents) sends out new cards using coil stamps but so far seem to be stuck with 2009.

March 2012 update: The British Heart Foundation also uses 2nd class coil stamps, this is the 2009 self-adhesive:

 (Thanks, Michael)

Let us know of any additions to this list, by email or using the comments box; either way I'll add them to the list.

Arnold Machin Centenary MS update - new source AND year codes!

Thanks to a reader - we don't yet have our stock - we can now show a single stamp from the Arnold Machin Centenary Souvenir Sheet.  As you can see this has the year code AM11 and the source code MMIL.  In full the relevant line of the overlay reads ALAM11ROYALMMIL.

And from the postagelabelsuk blog, we can show the Machin Centenary Faststamps. All 6 values will be produced by the Hytach machines Stampex:

Inset Phosphor Bands on Security Stamps

I don't have much occasion to write about phosphor band variations on modern stamps.  Most variations I have seen are on the booklet stamps, but even then the shift is very slight and not worthy of a catalogue listing by even the most detailed catalogue.

I've now had a report that the 1st class Large from Business sheets exists with bands Inset from Right clear of the  margin.  These are from sheets 03-11-10 with yearcode MA11.  If anybody is interested please contact me by email.

New Machin source code this year?

Royal Mail have announced an issue to mark the centenary of the birth of Arnold Machin, sculptor who produced the iconic design of our current definitives (based on a photograph by John Hedgecoe).

As announced:
Marking the centenary of the birth of Arnold Machin  .... a souvenir sheet of 10 definitive stamps... will be issued on the opening day of Stampex, 14 September 2011. The stamps are not new issues, they will have full security features except the security slits and will have conventional gum.

So these will not be self-adhesive, but coventionally gummed, so they are a new stamp for collectors because the year code should be M11L or MA11.  We doubt that Royal Mail will pass up the opportunity to introduce a new source code, however we can only guess at what that might be! We do not know which values will be included in the sheet - a face value of £4.60 suggests 10 x 1st class, but that is by no means certain!

More information will be published here as it is made available.

Machin definitives with security features - SG catalogues

As has been reported elsewhere the Stanley Gibbons catalogue editors have adopted a totally new numbering system for the Security definitives in the GB Concise 2011 edition. Unfortunately there is no table of numbers changed, and the separation of those issued without a year indicator (ie in 2009) from those with a year indicator (ie 2010 or later) into two separate series has, in my opinion, only served to confuse. Not only that, but the whole section is headed with the caveat that the numbering is only temporary!

I appreciate that catalogue editors can only react, once or twice a year, to a rapidly changing situation. Dealers, in their own price lists, can adapt and allocate a number to each new variant as it appears. The amended Norvic system (we published a revised list in December last year), using a decimal for the year indicator, is infinitely useful - well at least until 2019, allowing for each individual variation of a stamp to be identified.

I've now prepared a table showing Gibbons' 2010 and 2011 Concise numbers, and those in Collect British Stamps, with the equivalent Norvic numbers which should enable collectors to find their requirements from our online shop.

Just a few Norvic numbers have changed. The Recorded Signed For and Special Delivery stamps fall into line with Gibbons. For the stamps with face values, rather than start, like Gibbons, at 2901 and inevitably rely on 'a' and 'b', and even 'aa' numbers, and a continuous process of change as new values are added for new tariff stamps every year, I have started at 3001 for the 1p, and used Royal Mail's system with the £1 value being 3100, and the £1.65 value being 3165. Thus if April 2012 brings 87p & £1.25 stamps they will logically get numbers 3087 and 3125.
