Another new Machin definitive stamp has appeared

We can now report (thanks to IR) that the 1st class Large business sheet with MA13 year code has appeared with a printing date of 04/03/13.  Thanks to Richard P for the pictures:

  1. It would appear that this could/should be the last one....but who knows?

  2. There may also be some last minute P/13 stamps if there is a prestige book for the Children's television stamps on 7th January. And then there is always the distant possibility of 10,000 rolls.

Then we start all over again with 14 ...

    1. That's a very good point. There isn't a PSB for Children's Television, but it's possible that the first one (Stampex, say?) may be produced on the 2013 contract and have 13 codes.

  3. One word. Aaaaaagghhhh!
PS Anyone care to guess what the Lighthouse coverage of these issues is going to be? Thought not! ;)

    1. I don't see why Lighthouse albums should be any different for 2013 than they have been for 2009-12, whatever that was. This is nothing new, as we have had these security variants since 2009. Seehttp://blog.norphil.co.uk/2009/04/security-codes-b-b-c-t-f-s-codebreakers.html

Apologies to Goodwin whose follow-up comment I deleted in error:

"I suppose what I mean is will Lighthouse have spaces for every single variant?"

But my response is still, "Lighthouse will presumably make space for these stamps in the same way that they have done for the last 5 years. I don't know what that is because I don't have Lighthouse albums."

    1. Just make your own albums, decide what you want to collect and ignore what you don't - easy!

    2. I collect the Machin definitives with all the source code letters and the year date code letters and have found the Lighthouse system very good for these with most being included. I have made some lists of these stamps that have been issued since 2009 when the first source code were used and have found that up to last year only 11 variations are not in the Lighthouse definitive album. These are mainly the security slit variations or the change of printer. For example the Diamond Jubilee 1st class ex business sheet was printed by both De La Rue and then Walsall. Lighthouse only has a space for one so I used the first issue of this which was De La Rue. I then have a spare blank page made by Lighthouse at the back of my album and put the variations in there with a small label to show what it is. The only slight draw back is I have to wait until about April of the following year for all the new supplement pages and with some of the 2012 red 1st class coming out in 2013 these have had to be put in to a stock book until next year for the 2013 supplement pages.

    3. Thank you Brian. I was sure a Lighthouse user would come and explain everything.

I suspect the SG album will only include spaces for the stamps that are listed in their Concise catalogue, if only because the specialised is so far behind (despite supplements in GSM) that it is difficult to know what they have included and what they haven't.

I use a stockbook to keep a master collection of singles - but even that requires periodic rearrangement. At least the Jubilee - and I hope the gold - stamps are now finished :-)

  5. For what it's worth, Royal Mail themselves don't bother with the Machin definitive codes in their De Luxe Album annual supplements.
Of course, there's nothing to stop you from adding an additional page(s) with these and other specialised definitive variations if you so desire.
