Dark 1st class counter sheet M16L now in stock
First reported in Stamp Magazine the first counter sheets of the 1st class dark red were printed in December 2016 (coded M16L), but apparently buried in Post Office stores under later printings of M17L as very few appeared during 2017.

Unanticipated new Machins.
I use the term unanticipated rather than unexpected because I should have expected these to appear but one of them I didn't notice, and the other one I had written off as unlikely.
When writing about the new Star Wars booklets I concentrated on the fact that the booklets we had received had the SBP2 printing in different orientations, which is interesting even though we don't intend to sell the two types of SBP2 separately. What I overlooked was the low number of mixed-content (MCIL) booklets this year, and the fact that the only other two - Windsor Castle and David Bowie - were printed on SBP1!
Thus these booklets contain one definite new stamp - or two if you collect that way. The new 1st class deep scarlet M17L MCIL stamp is listed in our shop as 2936aC.7a
Back in the spring there were reports that the first counter sheets on paper with security printing on the backing paper were printed on 09/12/16, and a 1st class example was pictured in Stamp Magazine. Needless to say, none were found in post offices, and the M17L printed 27/02/17 appeared in April.
Collectors and dealers don't know whether Post Office Distribution Centre at Swindon has any specific way of storing and issuing stock (though we have long believed that it is random!) but it appears that the 2017 stock was stacked on top of or in front of the 2016 printings - which have now come to light!
The ones found were printed on 12/12/16 (a Monday), whereas the one shown in Stamp Magazine was printed on the Friday.
The 1st class deep scarlet counter sheet M16L has been listed in our checklist as 2914a.6 just for the record. Few sheets have been reported so far, so it's unlikely many dealers will have them - although we await more reports.
It will be listed in our shop using this number as soon as we have supplies to offer. At the moment we can only show this picture.

Update on new stamp printings
As we reported earlier the latest printing of the 1st class Wales country definitive introduced cylinder or plate C2 in all four colours for the first time.
We can now confirm that by comparison with the C1 printing the dragon is a lighter shade, and so this is a collectable difference for some people. In this picture C2 is on the right.
More telling, though, is the way the phosphor looks. Held horizontally to the light the phosphor C2 is much less visible than was C1.
We've listed the new 17/11/16 printing on our web-shop as W122c.2, with the C1 printings as W122c. We have a few date and cylinder/plate* blocks.
* I'm told the correct term for litho is a 'plate', whereas for (photo-)gravure the term 'cylinder' is normally used. However, as collectors and dealers have traditionally used the term cylinder we will continue with that.

This week two new stamps have been reported found locally: the 6 x 1st booklet coded M16L MSIL on SBP2 paper, and the 1st class business sheet coded M16L MBIL also on SBP2. We hope to have these in stock next week.
UPDATE 7 APRIL
News of further new M17L counter sheet printings has reached us, and we should have these after the Easter holidays. No indication of whether there is security printed backing paper on any of these.
Reported this week are:
10p (27/01/17), 2nd Large (13/03/17), 1st (27/02/17), 1st Large (01/03/17), 1st Large Signed For (26/01/17), Special Delivery 100g (01/02/17).

Additions to shop: new booklets on SBP2 and new MoD M011 Faststamps.
Recent new printings of definitive stamps may soon be replaced, so look out for them now!
I can now show pictures of the 1st and 2nd x 12 booklets on the second type of Security Backing Paper (SBP2). These were printed in late 2016 and have appeared with packing dates of 12-14/12/16. So although this must have been quite a large print run (with packing of the 1st class over 3 days and the 2nd over at least two), we can safely assume that the next print run will be in 2017 and have M17L code.
When the first type appeared Gibbons allocated new whole numbers to the booklets, and I suspect that this time they will only allocate sub-numbers. I have temporarily allocated catalogue numbers ME7a to the 2nd class and MF9a to the 1st class booklets, although this will change if Gibbons allocate new whole numbers.
Similarly the stamps are 2931.6a (2nd SBP2) and 2936.6b (1st SBP2) in our system.
However, distribution from the Swindon Supplies Depot is, as usual, erratic. One correspondent reported that after the latest books had been sold subsequent supplies had year code 15 (and therefore were the old colour). Depending on the ordering policy of your local postmaster, he may never see the new booklets (one branch locally still has 2nd class Large booklets with M12L year code!)
UPDATE 15 March - latest date seen on 1st class packs is 16/01/17, but still M16L.
On 1st class booklets seen so far the iridescent printing is very indistinct, clearer under the phosphor than the plain area, which means that the codes are almost impossible to see. These pictures took some effort to produce:
The 2nd class booklets have much more distinct iridescent printing and the coding stands out well:
The new security printing is darker than the first, so SBP2 is easier to see than SBP1 on single stamps. Singles from booklets will always have usefully large margins of backing paper, but singles from business sheets - other than those from the edges of panes - will be more difficult. As last year, once the booklets of 6 and 4 appear I will have the front cover page, which has no stamps, and will be able to supply to customers on request so that you can illustrate your collections clearly. Look out for a notice on the blog.

New Security Backing Paper on latest definitive printings
Last year we mentioned that Royal Mail had ordered a change to the security printing on the backing paper of self-adhesive stamps so that the paper could be used inverted without producing a variety. This would be achieved by printing alternate pairs of lines upside-down. If the paper had to be re-rolled, it would still be up the right way! We're calling this 'Security Backing Paper v2' or SBP2.
The March issue of Stamp Magazine reports that a 9 December 2016 printing of the 1st class counter sheet stamp is not only on backing paper with a security print (the first time for a counter sheet), but that it follows the described pattern. So this is two 'firsts': the first De La Rue counter sheet with security backing paper, and the first with the alternate inverted printing. The year code is M16L - it also appears to be in the new dark shade. If this proves to be the case these M16L stamps may be in short supply, in the light of other news below.
We also understand that there is a newDecember 2016 4 January 2017 printing of the 2nd class counter sheet, with year code M17L, so this would be the second stamp with a year 17 code: we don't have any confirmation that this has security backing paper, but it seems likely. (The Windsor Castle booklet stamp already announced will be the third - probably!).
UPDATE (later same day): the 2nd class counter sheet and business sheet have also been reported on new backing paper. The counter sheet may be the same 04/01/17 printing referred to above, but this has not been confirmed. The business sheet has M16L and a printing date of 15/12/16.

As you will know the text is printed in two sizes, Large (L) and Small (S). On SBP the lines are alternated, ie L/S/L/S. On the new paper the pattern is different if inverted. Using additional abbreviations for upright adn inverted, we now know that the format is:

Obviously this can be manipulated for any individual stamps, but it will be interested to see if any booklets, business sheets or counter sheets turn out to be on inverted paper!

Windsor Castle at Sixes and Sevens.
The first batch of stamps of the Windsor Castle issue have arrived, and inevitably there are some surprises.
As expected the mixed content retail booklet has two different special stamps from the miniature sheet, and 4 x 1st class Machins, which are of course deep scarlet, and coded MCIL M17L. This stamp will be Norvic 2936C.7, and the booklet PM55 (which should be the SG number).
In the Prestige Stamp book, the Machin pane contains 3 x 1st class, 2 x 2p, 2 x 10p, and a single £1.05. I mentioned earlier that, based on its expected coding of M17L this once again would have only one set leaving us with a lot of spare postage.
In fact, the PSB stamps are coded MPIL M16L. As the £1.05 and 10p stamps were included in the Beatrix Potter PSB, only the 2p and the 1st class - previously issued in the Queen's birthday PSB - now in the new deep scarlet colour, are new.

Royal Mail 2017 stamp programme announced - plenty of Machins
As promised, Royal Mail have now released their 2017 programme and many lucky people have already received the January Philatelic Bulletin. Machin definitive stamps updated list for 2016
As I mentioned last week, two more definitives had been found but supplies had not yet reached us. We now have stocks and these two have been added to our webshop.
The 2nd class Large books of 4 were packed on 08/03/16 in the usual packs of 25. Cylinder numbers are W2(blue) W1(iridescent) W2(phosphor) and are hidden by the front cover. Single stamp Norvic 2933.6 and booklets RA2d.6
The 1st class Large business sheet has been a long time making an appearance at Post Offices having been printed on 11/02/16. Norvic 2916B.6 - and we have one top panel for sale.

Beatrix Potter definitives
I can now show images of the Machin definitives included in the Beatrix Potter prestige stamp book. These are in our list as 4005P.6 (5p), 4010P.6 (10p), 4105P (£1.05), and will be sold as a set on our webshop. The £1.05 will also be sold as a single stamp for those people who do not collect individual year variants.

The Future, In Safe Hands - new Stamp booklet from Royal Mail
I mentioned nearly a month ago that Royal Mail was to issue a new booklet of stamps at the end of July with a new cover reflecting their new padlock branding - which nobody reported has having been seen anywhere else!
We now have the design. As you can see the brass padlock on the front cover has an imitation 1st class stamp on it (I imagine the similar 2nd class booklets to be issued in October will have a similar 2nd class stamp picture on), and the back cover has the Royal Mail cruciform logo and space for the bar-code, with a new slogan between them, reading
The weight/dimension information and telephone numbers are now on the label on the inside. How this will translate to the books of 12 (including the 2nd class) we don't know.
(An interesting slogan, in the light of current events on the political stage.)
PS: As this stamp should be coded M16L MSIL it will be a new stamp with a specific issue date and we will produce a limited number of first day covers.
UPDATE 7 July: The stock code for this booklet is UB393 and it is being sent out to regular customers with Visible Change, with the 'Landscapes' Issue on 16/08/2016.
UPDATE 28 June:
No transport livery reported yet, but Suzanne of Artstamped reports this from Marylebone Underground Station - 'not just redirection, protection', and a similar one at Leamington Spa station.

As you probably know, the Google-originated adverts which appear to the right of the blog will vary for different viewers, based on your passed searching and viewing habits - cookies rule! Sometimes, however they do relate to the subject of the blog and this one appeared when I looked this morning.

We have now had confirmation from Royal Mail Tallents House that this IS a visible change and will be included in regular orders for both Collectors and Dealers standing orders.

More new Machin definitive printings and a new Scotland stamp.
Another month brings another batch of Machin reprints and a new Scotland stamp - updated 18 May with images, click on them to see enlargements
We've now received these new M16L printings which will be added to our shop later today along with replenishment of others:

The Scotland 2nd class has also been reprinted:we're obtaining some stock to establish whether they are appreciably different. This is a totally new stamp as the Queen's head and face value are now printed in grey and there is no silver plate.
For this printing, the plate contains only this stamp, in all four grid positions - the previous ones have been shared with the 1st class Scotland in the right-hand column.
This should have a new catalogue number, though I suspect it may be an 'a' number to avoid wholesale renumbering. It will be listed in our webshop as S130a.
Also reported, on security backing paper, is the 1st class Large business sheet. But there are some problems with identification. I won't know for sure until I have them to hand, and only have these two images so far, of different stamps. On all other M16L stamps the figure '6' is quite different from the figure '5' on last year's stamps.These look like 15 but one could be 16! The ones we have are definitely '15'.
Lastly, reported but not yet received, the 1st Large booklet of 4 is now available in a 2016 printing with year code M16L, instead of MA1- as in previous years.
