Very sad day.
ReplyDeleteIt is the end of an era, and history will be kind to her as someone who dedicated her whole life to service. She will be missed
DeleteA sad day and somehow, strangely, one that many of us hoped would never come
ReplyDeleteDo you think the Royal Marine stamp issue will be postpone and make some time for RM to issue a new set of Charles III definitive stamps? Can anyone tell definitive stamps and other commemorative with ERII icon can still be used after the issue of Charles III image stamps?
ReplyDeleteSo sad, I'm guessing RM will release a Miniature Sheet or a Stamp Commemorative set to mark the event of her passing away. With probably another set at some point to mark Prince Charles to commemorate his ascension to King Charles III.
ReplyDeleteAnd hopefully an Investiture set for the Prince of Wales
DeleteWill RM use this as an excuse to invalidate all non-barcoded stamps? What happened after KG6 passed away?
ReplyDeleteStamps remained valid - as did those of his brother and father - until 1972.
DeleteThere’s already quite a bit of misinformation out there about “stamps with the Queen’s head” only being valid until January 2023. The Machin demonetisation is being conflated with the monarch change so expect no end of confusion!
ReplyDeleteVery sad news. Rest in peace your Majesty.
ReplyDeleteFrom a stamp point of view, when do you think we will see the end of the Machin era?
It will be interesting to see what format the King Charles lll definitives take. A classic engraved design or a more modern photographic style?
What may happen now is that many collectors call it a day and stop buying when KCIII issues appear.
DeleteNot unexpected given Her Majesty's age and recent infirmities, but nevertheless so sad to experience the end of such a unique reign, especially for those of us (probably the majority) who have known no other.
DeleteI think it reasonable to assume that we've already seen the end of the Machin era in terms of new issues. What the replacement will be, we must wait and see.
RIP your Majesty and Long Live the King.
Sad indeed, if inevitable. 2 PMs and 2 Monarchs in one week - I don't imagine that's likely to be repeated any time soon! Stamp wise, I've always felt that the likelihood is that Machins would actually become more popular once the end of the series arrived as it would be a closed collection, ie nothing new coming along every year, making it more palatable for those who want 'one of each type'.
DeleteI assume that the next few Royal Mail planned stamp issues (Royal Marines, BBC, Christmas 2022 & Tutankhamen) will all feature Queen Elizabeth II, which will be quite strange seeing as she is no longer with us.
ReplyDeleteCan they? I wonder if RM have been planning in advance and can redesign by replacing the Machin head. or will they already be printed?
DeleteI think that's almost certain. I heard an interview with someone from RM, where it was made clear that they would not be pulping any stamps already printed. Given the lead times for producing issues, I would expect everything in 2022 to have the late Queen's head.
DeleteI would be very surprised if these are issued with the image of the Queen. Whether they will have an image of the King remains to be seen. I suspect as a minimum, the Christmas issue will have had an image of KCIII agreed for the issue by then.
DeleteI don't believe that there is a planned stamp issue to celebrate the BBC.
DeleteTh designs for the coin obverses were agreed in 2018. If the Machin precedent is followed then the coin designs will be used for the stamps, so new stamps will be available soon. The datamatrix Machins will be rare, but not as rare as the datamatrix country stamps, I cannot get any and the only one I have seen - so they do exist - was on a letter to Ian on this blog. Rarest stamp for many years then is likely to the Ulster 2nd Class NVI. As Royal Mail only printed these stamps reluctantly I cannot see them printing more new designs of country stamps. We are in for interesting times now and do not forget that there may be a General Election in 2 years' time and a Labour Government.
DeleteThis years Christmas stamps will already have been printed and it's very unlikely that they will be reprinted.
DeleteIn 1952 it was ten months before the new monarch appeared on British stamps.
All Special Stamps that have already been announced will be issued, although the launch dates of some may change". (Ian, Norvic)
