My thanks to my fellow-blogger on the Commonwealth Stamps Opinion blog for finding and posting the latest version of the Royal Mail Special Stamp Calendar for 2025.
A probable second Music Giants does not appear now (unless it's a late November issue), and we have a Snoop(y) Dog in Peanuts, with his friends presumably.
'Mushrooms' appeared in the original list, which was withdrawn, as 'Fungi'.
Steam Locomotives was widely predicted, but not Monty Python. I wonder what new version of Monopoly is being launched (or maybe a film?).
I'll produce an updated table later and link to it from the January entry.
White Knight commenting - I see that a production company is developing a ‘Monopoly’ movie and has been working on it since 2024.
ReplyDeleteFrom the Glovearall website
ReplyDeleteSnoopy’s ties to the military-run deep—his Flying Ace persona channels the daring spirit of wartime pilots, and he has long been an unofficial mascot in the British Armed Forces, appearing on aircraft nose art, morale patches, and squadron insignias. Likewise, the Gloverall duffle coat, adapted initially from WWII military surplus, has a storied military heritage of its own. Over the years, it has become a wardrobe essential for students, explorers, and creatives, making it a true British outerwear icon. From the windswept decks of naval ships to the streets of university towns, Snoopy and the duffle coat have remained steadfast companions to those who value timeless design and adventure
If it is Peanuts the cartoon strip, then this has got to qualify for the most tenuous connection ever?
As an ex British Railways footplate man I will be very interested to see what locomotives will be chosen I can think of a couple of really famous ones, but let's see.
ReplyDeleteI have to say, Royal Mail has put together an incredibly well-thought-out lineup for the second half of the year—at least in my opinion!
ReplyDelete3 July – Mushrooms
I suspect this will focus on varieties found in the British Isles, but let’s not overlook just how “viral” mushrooms have become in recent years. From furniture stores to trendy designs and toys, they’re everywhere—especially toadstools. Next time you're in a shop or shopping centre, I guarantee you'll spot one. Given this widespread appeal, I can see these stamps being extremely popular.
24 July – Peanuts
I completely agree with ‘Anonymous’ above—if this set is indeed dedicated to Peanuts (as in Snoopy and friends rather than 'everyone's favourite NUT!'), the connection may be a bit tenuous. However, let’s consider its marketability. As we all know, Royal Mail operates for profit (!), and Snoopy is more popular than ever in the UK. There’s even a dedicated shop for him in London. These stamps have the potential to go viral, much like the limited-edition products that sell out instantly online. Securing the Peanuts license is a major win for RM, and I have no doubt these will be a massive hit—especially in the USA, Japan, and beyond. I will definitely be buying these. Well played, RM!
14 August – Monty Python
An absolute classic. Their influence is undeniable, and we all saw this one coming—rightly so!
11 September – Ducks
Much like mushrooms, ducks are a quirky and fun theme that has captured the public’s imagination/ hearts online. Very 'meme-able' animals, I've noticed. However, I hope these designs inject a bit more personality compared to the ‘Garden Wildlife’ set. Expect some ruffled feathers (!) over which species made the cut and which didn’t!
25 September – Steam Locomotives
A surefire hit among current philatelists and railway enthusiasts alike. While not all stamp collectors are ferroequinologists, I’d wager that most ferroequinologists will be very interested in this set. There's a strong global market for train-themed collectibles, so these should do well internationally.
16 October – Monopoly
Though an American invention, Monopoly is undeniably synonymous with Britain—especially London. I imagine the stamp designs will incorporate the iconic street tiles and board imagery. If done right, they’ll be sleek, visually striking, and possibly even a little retro.
4 November – Christmas 2025
No explanation needed! I adored Judy Joel’s 2024 designs and hope for another unique and charming set this year.
27 November – TBC
If this turns out to be a ‘Musical Giants’ release, I’ll say it again—let it be Kate Bush, please! Even if there’s no specific anniversary to tie it to, her album art is iconic and would translate beautifully into stamps. Perhaps George Michael as well? Didn’t the Royal Mint release a coin for him recently?
I'll return to these predictions later! Thanks for update as ever, Ian
Aurelia, I agree that if it is a music giants Kate Bush would be good, but I think Yes would be a great issue their album covers are classic, especially Tales from Topographic Oceans, or Genesis Nursery Crime.
DeleteMy favourite was always Never For Ever - then again, I think Ms Bush would have to agree to a special release of stamps in her name and I don't know how she'd take it! A very humble, down to earth and private individual...
