Royal Marines - 29 September 2022

Readers will be aware that the set and MS for the Royal Marines issue will be on 29 September.

Publicity for this was postponed due to the period of mourning, although Gibbons Stamp Monthly's latest issue was printed too late to prevent their inclusion.

Until Royal Mail give the go ahead I won't be able to add details here but you can see the stamps at Commonwealth Stamps Opinion blog, and in the following post there are images of the set of 4 stamps issued by La Poste in France on the day of the funeral of HM The Queen to mark her passing.

It is to be hoped that Royal Mail do something pretty sharpish, if a respected foreign government can produce something that quickly.

  1. Royal Marines are in the RM shop but with very scant details, it does not give the size of the miniature sheet, do RM really care, the telephone site has a waiting time to speak to an agent of 50 mins this morning!

  2. The issue is now visible on the RM website - go to https://shop.royalmail.com/special-stamp-issues to see what's on offer.

  3. Well done La Poste , Royal Mail frequently don't deliver mail that quick . The RM management will still be discussing what biscuits to have at the meeting to discuss an issue. Perhaps the Chinese fakers could take over production of new stamps for them.

  4. Ian why is RM stopping you from showing details of Royal Marines when the issue has been on the online shop for 2 days? It's ridiculous

  5. So, another handstamp centre has closed and the Philatelic Bulletin has ceased publication, clear signs that they have killed the goose and there are no more golden eggs. Add in that many collectors will be calling a halt with the passing of the Queen. And yet they insist on this stupid embargo. Make that senseless. Headless chickens have more clue.

  6. I liked La Poste's issue, with the accompanying paragraph:
"Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth of York who became Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is a legend. In seventy years of reign, Elizabeth II succeeded in embodying, against all odds, the stability of the United Kingdom and the unity of the Commonwealth. Driven by a keen sense of duty, devoting herself entirely to the royal institution and to her people, she personified with dignity and grace the British national identity, lacking neither courage in the dark hours of history, nor a simple smile during the joyous festivities during which the whole nation gathered around her in a spirit of communion. Certainly, after Elizabeth II and Victoria, Elizabeth II will remain as one of the greatest sovereigns in the history of Great Britain."

  7. Having looked at the British Forces Philatelic site, they have been informed by RM that they are unable to provide details of this issue until 29/09/2022.
    What an utter fiasco.

  8. Looking at the images on the Royal Mail website, will this be the first ever GB stamp issue with the "wrong monarch" on it? I am very surprised that this issue will be gong ahead with Queen Elizabeth on them - I would have thought they would have to be reprinted and issued at a later date with Charles on them. I wonder how many forthcoming issues will not have the reigning monarch on them? To me: this is bizarre!! :-)

  9. They continued issuing previous monarch stamps for every monarch change. I don't think we will see Charles appear on stamps for a while yet.

    1. But there have never been any commemorative stamps issued after the end of a reign with the previous monarch's head. That's what is different this time - of course now that there are so many special issues there was really no option.

  10. Peter dont worry .It does not commemorate any important anniversary anyway and is just issued for thematic collectors and like most "commemorative" issues is printed abroad by lithography as we dont have any printers
in UK except for machins and Christmas

    1. As you say, special issues are printed in France - by International Security Printers - whose UK branch prints definitives, Christmas - and country definitives. The same company also prints for many other countries thus bringing in foreign earnings to the UK.
