Images of 2018 World War I Centenary stamp designs now on the web.

And as the August 16 (Captain Cook) issue is revealed to a wide audience (see below) Buckingham Covers have put added the World War I first day covers to their website.

As with previous issues we are not yet allowed to show the World War I issue, but you can see the set, the miniature sheet, and the prestige stamp book panes here.

As usual the 1st class stamps include a new Poppy design, a poem - this time by Wilfred Owen - and a solider.  The airmail stamps show art, an artefact (airman's googles), and the Tomb of the Unknown Solider in Westminster Abbey.

The prestige stamp book panes show that there should be one new stamp for Machin collectors, the 1st class deep scarlet, gummed, coded MPIL M18L, the other four stamps being the definitive-sized poppy - again.  The PSB also includes, as usual, the full 2018 set with the final pane containing the other four poetry stamps issued 2014-17.

There is also a retail booklet which containing the Poppy stamps from 2014 and 2018, and as announced at the start of the series, there will be a composite sheet of 30 stamps, a row for each year, and a column for Poppy, poetry, people, art, memorials, and artefacts.

Mail by Bike:  Thanks to NG for pointing out that the Mail by Bike Post and Go stamps are shown on the Bradbury website.

  1. Are the Old Vic Stamps released prior to this set, Bradbury covers do not cover the Old Vic Stamps, you would have thought Bradbury covers would have published them first before The Great War set, unless the Old Vic stamp set is the October TBA set. As it seems strange to have a new release every fortnight 31st July, 16th Aug, 30 Aug and 13 Sept. RM is driving me nuts with the fortnightly release.

    1. Details and designs of Old Vic stamps are embargoed until 14 August, including those shown on cover producers' own products.

Yes, this means that they can show they WWI covers from 2 August, but the Old Vic not until 14th. We will be able to show the Old Vic on 14th, but the WWI not until 6 August. I presume the Mail by Bike will be the same date, although the date on our news release is 5 July 2017!

The October TBA issue will be announced, we have been told, between 18-25 September for issue on 16 October. Christmas stamps may be shown on FDC producers' sites from 20 September, but by us until the issue date of 1 November unless Royal Mail reveal the designs beforehand.

For this reason we will not add any new issue pages to our main website after the end of this year, but simply put the details on this blog.

    2. Ebay seller paul251071 regularly shows stamps and/or presentation packs in advance of embargo dates. He has the Old Vic presentation pack u now. He used to offer to mail a week or so before the issue date. He has done this for the last few issues and have have drawn Royal mail's attention to this. Whilst he has altered despatch arrangements he continues to breach the embargo so I can only assume Royal Mail are not that bothered

    5. I think getting your GSM on Saturday is earlier than usual: certainly I get mine later on subscription, so if I get it Monday/Tuesday that will be in line. I'll do another post about this to show how silly the embagos are.

    1. My mistake, included in this issue are the 1p, 2p, 5p, & 2nd large counter sheet, of course these are the NVC's

  3. For the cost of this issue, stamp collectors only getting 1 new Machin stamp, is a bit of a rip off, especially as one pane in the PSB are stamps 4 years old! They could have made this issue so much better.

    1. Spoken like a true Machin collector! Come on, you are in a minority: more people buy special stamps than collect Machins in the amount of detail that the true Machin enthusiast does. And why are you complaining, you don't have to buy them all.

As usual, we shall be selling the 1st class Machin as a single - and we can use up all the spare poppy stamps on the letters to send the Machin to you!

    2. True Ian, but I also collect the special stamps, so have to shell out haha. Just saying that RM are not very imaginative with their selections.

  4. I've received an Order Advice Note from Tallents House re. 1st WW issue 13/9/18 - £46.45.
From the information on the Buckingham page I calculate my order as follows:
    Set of stamps 3 x 67p, 3 x £1.55 = £6.66.
    Prestige Book - Stamps £6.66, Poetry £2.68, Machins+Poppies £5.36, Surcharge 95p ?
    Total for book £15.65. I get 2 so £31.30.
    Retail book 6 x 67p = £4.02. I get 2 so £8.04
    Summary £6.66 + £31.30 + £8.04 P&P 45p = £46.45.
There is no mention of a miniature sheet on the Buckingham page.
I have a S.O. for generic and collectors' sheet, so perhaps the sheet of 30 will be issued later. I will check with Tallents House.
Very many thanks for the info.

    1. You are correct, there is no miniature sheet as there has not been for each of the previous years. A slip of the keyboard fingers.

I believe the composite sheet will not be automatically distributed as the stamps have already been issued. That's not to say that there will not be differences for the serious philatelist, possibly in the phosphor, or shade - unlikely to be in perforation.

  5. Just a thought, could the composite sheet be issued closer to Remembrance Sunday which this year actually takes place on the 11th of the 11th ? Some connection with the 'to be announced' issue of 16th October ? Which will be around the time when the Royal British Legion start the Poppy Campaign.

    1. The composite sheet will be available from the same date as the rest of the stamps (barring any unexpected production difficulties). The October 16th issue is unrelated.

The release of the WWI stamps so far ahead of Armistice Day gives cover producers two bites at the golden egg, of course.

    2. Centenary of the Armistice wold surely have been more important than Prince Charles 70th. The 90th justified a MS. But apparently not in the eyes of Royal Mail. I don't think even Prince Charles would think his 70th is more important

  6. Just a heads up for those collectors who use Trafalgar Square post office and who are perhaps planning there day around Stampex.
From the 4th September the Monday to Friday opening time will be 11:00 in the morning this is whilst landlord refurbishment works continue here.
There is no change to the evening closing times or the Saturday hours.

  7. Walter Tull is the fourth Tottenham Hotspur player to feature on Royal Mail stamps after Danny Blanchflower (1996), Jimmy Greaves (2013) and Dave Mackay (2013).

  8. I'm still convinced the 16 October TBA stamp set, is based on a film release, its usually that time of the year when Star Wars was released, I was thinking Mary Poppins Returns as most of the cast are British as well.

I wish RM start slimming down stamps set to 11 sets per year (1 set every month), the stamps are just getting expensive each year. The daft release this year has to be The Old Vic, we had a theatre stamp set not so long ago, with those horrible Shakespeare's quotes.
