No more heavy bags at London Stampex

As part of the reorganisation of their selling space, Royal Mail will not take the usual quantities of stock to London's Stampex event at Islington's Business Design Centre from 14-17 February 2018.

Purchasers of large or bulky products such as albums and framed stamps from the Royal Mail stand will receive free postage and packing and their purchases will be posted on to them after the show.

The new stand will have no Post and Go machines.  The full range of definitive stamps will be available, as well as special stamps, although not in the quantities that have been available in the past.  However, more popular stock will be replenished overnight should that be necessary.

The Mail by Sea Post and Go stamps will be issued on the opening day, and the Votes for Women set of 8 stamps in 4 values will be available on day 2, 15th February.

  1. Ian - We know there are no Post & Go machines at Stampex, but you say "Mail by Sea ... will be issued on the opening day!" Are they bringing pre-printed stock with them?

    1. No, it will be the usual Bureau pack - http://blog.norphil.co.uk/2018/01/postal-heritage-mail-by-sea-post-and-go.html

  2. Jersey, Guernsey & Gibraltar will all have P&G at Stampex, yet our own postal administration can't be bothered. A dismal state of affairs.

    1. Damned if they do, damned if they don’t!
By not having the machines at Stampex RM have reduced the costs for the people who ‘must have everything’. No commemorative inscription, whereas some would say that the islands - already producing far too many stamps and PG variations - carry on milking it.

    2. Hi Ian, I take your point but I don't really buy into the 'completeist' line. I would class myself as a longtime collector and would like to complete my collection. However, there are errors/specialised varieties etc that I've chosen not to collect, and there are others that I can't currently afford. But it would be nice to have the choice. When we go shopping elsewhere, no-one forces us to buy everything on offer, but it's nice to have the option where we can. I know this is an old argument but just to have material available for purchase is not necessarily milking the market. Stamp collecting is a choice, not a necessity.

    3. I think the point is there are several hundred outlets nationwide where the Machin and Mail By Sea stamps will be on sale. They may not be available to all collectors but adding Stampex doesn’t add anything, except one totally different variant from a NON-OPERATIONAL machine (ie not for operational postal purposes produced just for philatelists).

    4. Agreed, but they will no doubt be selling Prestige Books, Presentation Packs and Commemorative Sheets, when none of these have operational uses and are created just for philatelists.

    5. True. But let’s see them take one step at a time.
      No p&g at Perth either
