Update 18 June: The book is printed as usual by International Security Printers (Walsall) in gravure. The stamp on the left is the (threatened) Common Skate, and that on the right shows (sustainable) Cornish Sardines. The 1st class red Machin definitives are expected to be coded MCIL M14L. The 'first day of availability' from Tallents House will be 18 August: I would suggest that this is unlikely to be in regular post office branches on that date but will probably be distributed against subsequent orders for 6 x 1st booklets. Royal Mail stock code is UB376.

Special postmarks have been announced for this booklet:
13169 from the Scotland amd NI SHC, Tallents House, Edinburgh
13171 from the Wales and West SHC, Cardiff
The set to be issued on 5 June consists (as is so often the case) 10 x 1st class, and although the issue title is 'Sustainable Fish' in fact 5 are 'under threat' and 5 'sustainable'.
Issued in two sheets, the Sustainable (row 1) are Herring, Red Gurnard, Dab, Pouting, and Cornish Sardine. The Threatened (row 2) are Common Skate, Spiny Dogfish, Wolffish, Sturgeon and Conger Eel.
Amazing that the Herring is now sustainable when reduced numbers (by over-fishing) in the North Sea contributed to so many job-losses from Aberdeen to Lowestoft!

Oh! dear another 5 booklets to search for, Cylinder, Short Band Top, Short Band Bottom, Irodine shifts North and South, and who knows possibly inset bands as well.

ReplyDeleteAt last a lovely British issue depicting Fish. I work on a trawler out of St. Ives and have been working on a stamp issue for 2 years, my idea is to have a 'surf and turf' theme showing three stamps bearing common Fish found off the West Coast together with three stamps showing the various Pasties we produce (meat, cheese & onion etc.) in a se-tenant block of six layout. I am now at the stages of contacting the RM.... any ideas on who I should write too? Cheers, Bruce

DeleteAnd in case you are wondering about a big gap in the numbers, I think the four new phone number booklets are within the 370-4 range with one number unused, and 375 will be Classic Locos of Wales, which suggests that the fish were either forgotten or added late on!
The booklets were available from Post offices on 18th August. But NOT from Tallents House until 18th September - they have linked it to the Sea Side issue, that comes out on the same day as Retail booklet for Locomotives of Wales, and the day after Symbolic Flowers. Can anything else come out that week (i.e. Stampex week) - Stuart
ReplyDeleteThe distribution arrangements from Tallents House are just that, and are designed to reduce the handling fees and costs incurred by collectors, I suspect.
DeleteThe booklets were available on 18 August, as you say, and would have been supplied then to anybody wanting to prepare first day covers with the postmarks shown above.
