XXX Olympiad London 2012 Olympic Games 'postmark'.

I noticed this surprise 'postmark' on an internet forum.

I'm making enquiries as to what it's status is - postmark or cachet - whether it is actually used at the Games venue or applied elsewhere, and how to obtain more!

A similar rubber stamp is applied to the inside of the Smilers Stamps folder:

  1. Looks like the cachet used at the Olympic Village Post Office and stamped inside the front cover of all Olympic Smilers sheets. See www.smilers-info.com/news.htm

  2. I might be able to shed some light on this.

There was a second "Post Office" in the Main Press Centre. It was signed as Postal Services, and didn't provide the full range of services that a normal PO would, presumably to avoid stepping on the toes of the express mail and banking sponsors of the Games.
As well as a postbox for mail to be stamped with the the 'Let the Games Commence' and Olympic Park E20 Union Jack postmarks, this London 2012 Olympic Games cachet was available as a self-inking rubber stamp at the counter.

I have a couple of the gold medal winner FDCs with the cachet on the back - I'll email you a picture.

The 'Welcome to the Olympic Games' FDC was very popular with foreign journalists, who were queuing up to get them in their dozens, and staff kept having to send for more stock from the Olympic Village post office - the athletes apparently having other things to worry about than buying stamps. The medal winners' stamps were far more popular with Brits!
